  1. Thanks for the replies. Over the weekend I emailed Jabsco and they have just responded. They say it should not blow the fuse and 15amp is correct. They also say provided the pressure switch has not been adjusted then I should return it and it will be checked. I don't even know where the pressure switch is so that has not been changed. But it got me thinking. I have installed it without an in-line water filter, deciding to get a new one which is yet to arrive. By not having one of those, is that having the same effect as adjusting the pressure switch? Again, my simple brain tells me not because the water is supplied from the tank with only gravity pressure. Thanks for your thoughts - just trying to find the simplest solution as I don't really want to have to put the old one back in!
  2. I have just replaced my old and sometimes rough running Shurflo 12v pump with a Jabsco par 4. This is a slightly lower pressure but higher output and was recommended to me by Jabsco. The installation was simple, old one out, new one in and the Jabsco ran straight away. But, on two occasions now it has caused the 15 amp fuse to blow - and this is the correct amp fuse as stated on the pump body. It seems to be the switching on, switching off process that is causing it blow as opposed to continuous running. IS this an indication of a faulty pump (which I would have thought unlikely) or is it something that I may have done wrong during installation?
  3. Thanks for the tips - a tube of Marine Flex is now winging its way to me via t'internet.
  4. Hi I want to permanently install a satellite dish to my roof. The dish has aluminium fixing plates which I want to stick to the roof and then permanently attach with small screws. What is the best adhesive to use? Many thanks
  5. Haven't had it running since last year (when it ran fine) and recently tried to get it going again - after a thorough clean. All seemed to check out, fuel flow etc. but the darn thing will not light! All that happens is the 'pineapple cubed sized' firelighter will burn (yellow) and try and light the diesel, but it will eventually go out and fill itself up with white smoke (which leaks into the boat!). I know fuel is flowing because if I don't turn it off after it has gone out, the chamber will flood. Its almost as if there is no air getting to the flame, and to be honest, I cannot work out how the air is supposed to get in there! So, any Bubble diesel experts? I've been through all the www.oilstoves troubleshooting guides, and still can't get it to light. Many thanks
  6. Can anybody recommend a mobile electrician that could visit my boat at Hemel Hempsted? I'm not overly confident beyond the basics (which I've already done and it hasn't fixed the problem) but I need two areas looking at The 240v 'ring-main' is split into two with what looks like one RCB looking after the left hand side, and another the RH side. At the moment only one side has power, and there are no obvious loose connections etc. The boat has a 240v Travel power generator which has no output when switched on. Again, I've checked the 'basics' such as drive belt and connections. I could, if necessary take the boat to a marina but would rather avoid that if possible. Many thanks
  7. Having finally purchased our 'dream' boat at the back-end of summer last year I was never particularly keen on its name and always thought I would change it. Talking to some friends (and fellow boaters) recently they told me that changing the name of a boat is considered to be extremely unlucky and should never be done! Is that an old 'wives tale' or are we potentially committing a terrible sin?
  8. Thanks for all the replies. Avtec, a Company I had not heard of until now, seem to be popular, and I have looked at their website. I like the fact that there TVs seem to cover all the bases, 12/240v, sat and terrestrial receivers etc. Now, time to spend some money..........
  9. In preparation for a 3 week cruise in the coming summer, and as a way to help persuade the kids (and wife!) that it really will be a good idea to live on a boat for 3 weeks I want to replace the current 'omni' aerial, supplying an old but clunky freeview box, with a sat dish and new 12v flatscreen tv/dvd player. There looks to be plenty available but what is best? I have been looking at the VuQube which although expensive, does seem to be easy and quick to tune. Anybody got experience of using these with built in receivers? Thanks all
  10. Okay, like that idea, nice and simple. But what I was wondering, is could I use the Bubble as a 'secondary' heat source, perhaps when cruising and it gets a bit chilly in the evenings but not enough to use the Webasto, so just light the Bubble like you would a multi-fuel stove?
  11. My boat has a Bubble stove with back-boiler driving the central heating system. Whilst it generally works, it does not suit my purposes and I am just about to get a Webasto heater with 7 day timer fitted. It should be an easy fir into the current system. The question is, what do I do with the Bubble stove? I believe it will have to be dis-connected from the existing system to allow the Webasto to do its job properly. I am quite happy for the stove to stay where it is, it looks good, it would make a mess if I pulled it all out, and it would be expensive to replace it with say a multi-fuel stove. So could I just use it as a diesel stove (Bubble make one without back-boiler) and would I have to modify it any way (its fitted with a Toby valve etc.)? Many thanks for your thoughts and ideas!
  12. Having just moved a boat recently purchased there are 3 things, all of which have been mentioned, that I found most noticeable. You run out of daylight very quickly, so get up nice and early (I was up by 0630 each morning) and get going. The locks can be dangerous. We didn't have any ice, and very little rain, but they are still very muddy and wet - this will slow you down because you have to be very careful. Finally, The leaves on the prop!! So glad I read this forum. I thought there was something wrong with my boat! Lots of power and noise, and it was slowing down! Discovered that a quick blip in reverse and then ops normal. On the plus side, the canals were very quiet. Good luck
  13. Hi Julynian Thanks for the info. The water temp knob is on full, but I hadn't considered looking at the circulation of the pump. I'm away from the boat at the moment so not sure precisely which one it is, but I do know its a 12v pump. I'll forage around next time I'm on the boat!
  14. Thanks for the replies. Just to confirm, there is a central heating pump rather than gravity feed. All appears to be working as it should be, just does not get very hot! I have asked the same questions to www.oilstoves.co.uk and they have promised me that there technical expert will come back as soon as he can. Thanks again
  15. Evening all, My first post having just registered so please be gentle(!) I also searched the forum history for 'bubble stoves' and could not really find an answer to my specific questions. Anyway, here goes: We have very recently finally purchased our long-term 'dream' in the form of a 56 ft narrowboat. It is just 7 years old and is fitted with a Bubble corner stove with back-boiler providing heating to 3 radiators and a heated towel rail. I have lit it twice with no problems and on one of those occasions it was running for over a week. The flame is blue and appears to be just as it should be. So, here's my questions: 1. The radiators do not get particularly hot, in fact warm at best, luke warm at worst. It has not been too cold recently and it is just about adequate but I fear in the depths of winter it will not be sufficient. As an aside, with the engine running and heating the water in the calorifier, the radiators get much, much warmer!(?) 2. I was advised by the marina where we purchased the boat not to use the 'coal effect' in the stove - they said it would reduce the effectiveness. Is this correct, because I thought if the 'rocks' heat up it will improve the efficiency? So in summary, how can I improve the efficiency of the Bubble stove and back-boiler? Many thanks Mike
