  1. I could not be bothered to go through the whole thread.

You need to clean the whole fuel system and change the oils. Check that the throttle is fully on and that the rudder is not going to fall of. Then someone like me will take you down to Margate or further and then an expert at X channel work will take you across on a separate boat!

You will take the journey on your boat and he will rescue you if it goes bottom up.(so to speak)

Lots of narrow boats have done this and the limitation is the sea state.

    Just insure accordingly.

  2. Could anyone suggest a supplier for an access/inspection port that could be retro-fitted to the top side of a diesel fuel tank. The tank is only about 2mm thick material so port would need to be bolted on with nuts/washers held one from inside, therefore it would need to be 5-6" diameter to fit hand through to tighten fixings. I've found plastic one for water tank but don't know if it would be okay for BSS.

Can't give you a name but you can just saw cut a hole, weld studs to the top and then custom make a 'rubber' gasket to fit the portal. Then its just a matter of bolting a plate of steel onto the studs. Keep it simple.

Don't forget to filter any fuel left in the tank.

  3. The difference between turbo oil and any other is that it will work at higher temperatures and not coke and also it will scavenge dirt particles better. If you cannot decide which oil to use then look and see if you have a turbo-supercharger. If not an SAE 30 will suffice.

if you put turbo oil into a dirty engine, you will need to change the oil and filter after a couple of hours.

  4. There are technical problems using anything above about 50 Mhz on the canal. Ditch crawling by nature is very difficult to maintain communication so the lower the frequency and by that the increase of wavelength will help continuous communication. Therefore the old CB band is very useful for inter-boat communications. As a qualified amateur, I would use 28 mhz as would Keeping Up.

So for reliable boat communications over distance, use a CB band. For close Boat to Boat coms, VHF is the only way to go. This is also a requirement.i

  5. Ok here I am again asking for opinions good or bad, this is another boat that I have arranged to view ( remember I,m a boat thickie) Ive made a little list of likes and dislikes and I have taken onboard about the importance of getting a survey carried out.

LIKES 1 within budget, although i,m not sure what to offer

    2 open plan layout

3 Plain paneling rather than T&G interior

    4 One owner from new

5 Local only a couple of hours cruising From the marina I intend to keep her.

    Dislikes

    1 Age 1984

2 louvered windows security issue (can alter)

3 Plain paint job ( can work on that)

    4 No wine cellar

5 Not sure about what i,m doing ( thats why i,m asking here.)

    Not sure abouts

1 BMC 1.5 Engine ( after reading posts in single cylinder thread) I will check for leaks and smoking.

2 Hull condition ( survey should give me info)

Anything you can add to my likes or Dislikes list would be most helpfull

    Thank you all in advance.

    Alan.

You missed the wine cellar, its next to the sunken bath!

  6. Subaru's new flat 4 long stroke diesel engine would be very good for boats. The power limitation in the car is due to cooling ie it would need much bigger radiators which is not a problem on a boat. The removal of the turbo so to normally aspirate, would yield sufficient power for narrow and broad-beam boats but would require a 2:1 reduction before the gearbox to get the prop speed right.

  7. Life is not difficult.

A three cylinder engine has balance. A four needs a counterbalance shaft. The quality of all 'a' and 'b' series engine need to be reflected upon. How many basic Ford engines have all of you seen on narrow boats? They are not marine engines and cannot be relied upon to take on what some of our members wish to do.

A machine needs to be fully reliable and cost effective. Something slammed together without any quality control will not last the job.

How many times over the last ten years have we read about duff engines with blown head gaskets and vibration, This does not count the ancillary problems as well. Smoking, who need it. Low duty cycles wreck all engines. We are experts at that.

    Hope this helps.

  8. I agree with Allan Jones. Unfortunately I had a butty on a shot tow and it was not properly ballasted so going through one bridge hole, caught the canvas cover corner on the butty. That's two things to remember, right tow length and proper ballasting.

  9. I think that with an actual increase in VAT of 2.1% the boat size is now critically expensive. You have to build to the VAT rules or pay a lot more. Not a good idea as all boats of that type will look the same.
