  1. Thank you everyone for the quick and helpful replies. One of the things that I love about the narrowboat community is the way everyone seems to help each other It seems I may not have explained myself very well. The readings that vary from 9.7mm to 6.4mm are all taken along the bottom on the hull. There seems to be a steady, but not necessarily consistent, reduction in hull thickness moving from bow to stern. It would appear that the original thickness of the baseplate must have been 10mm, so I'm concerned that the wear is excessive around the stern. The boat was built in 1994, so this seems like a lot of wear in that many years. When the boat was surveyed last year, the surveyor wasn't concerned by these readings, so maybe I'm just being paranoid. Thanks again, Dom.
  2. Hi, My first post here so please be gentle :-) We're thinking of buying out first narrowboat having only ever rented in the past. We've found a boat we like, but a survey done last year reveals that the hull thickness is 9.7mm in places and as low as 6.4mm in others. The current owners have only had the boat for 12 months but are selling it due to a very valid personal issue. Over the last year they've done a LOT of work to her including a full repaint. This is just cosmetic, and the hull thickness is more of an issue for me. The boat is a 1994 54ft semi trad. I've searched this excellent forum for topics on hull thickness, but can't seem to find any discussion on uneven wear such as this. So, should I be running away as fast as possible or is this something that's 'common' and can be addressed with over plating? Thanks in advance, Dom.
