  2. Advice please on name of the brown plastic faced ply used for cruiser stern decks, and if possible, a retail supplier not too far from West Midlands. And I've seen the edges protected by aluminium channels (?) - anything special about these?

    Thanks,

Some years ago I brought a sheet of this from Edens in Coventry. Try www.edens.co.uk

  3. Has anybody got any experience of running a washing machine from the above genny, the girly is pestering me. Could do with a small front loader, but I'm not sure what the honda will run? Is it better to have a washer drier or a separate drier? Ta.

Hi there, we have this genny and use it to run a Candy Front Loader. Not sure of model but Aqua 1000 comes to mind. The washer runs quite satisfactorily. Chris

  4. Most narrowboats have a fuel tank that holds about 50 gallons, or 227 litre.

On November 1st my fuel tank will be full. This fuel is for Propulsion.

I usually use about 6 litre of fuel per day

When cruising I usually travel for about 5 hours per day. 4 hours of this is for battery recharge/hot water.

This gives an 80/20 split. 20% of 6 litre is 1.2 litre.

My 227 litre of reserve fuel will allow me to cruise for 189 days. This increases as each day on board but not cruising uses non of my propulsion fuel.

So for at least 189 days cruising I can legitimately purchase fuel at 100% rebate price as I am only using up my previously purchased supply.

It is only after this time that I will have to start purchasing propulsion fuel.

Cotswaldman in his first message on this thread stated that the man from HMRC explained how they see the system will work.

Reading between the lines they do not want to have to be dealing with this tax. As long as boaters are seen to be acting in a responsible manner then their problem has gone away.

Thanks for that Oliver but Tacho works ok, it is only the hours meter that doesn't. I have obtained an hours meter but just need to know which wire controls it. I will try the black/blue that comes from the W terminal on the Alternator if no further advice is obtained.

  6. I have a Beta 38 Engine with standard control panel. On the back of the Tacho there are 5 wires. 2 of these are white, which I assume to be for illumination. Can anyone please tell me which of the other 3 control the hours meter which has stopped working and I wish to connect another meter .

  7. I am having trouble finding a suitable lock for the hardwood front doors fitted to my Liverpool Boats sailaway. The stiles on the doors are too narrow to take a standard mortice lock and the barrel on the surface mount lock in Midland Chandlers is to short to go through the door. I'm sure others have had this problem before, can anyone suggest a solution?

We used to have a Liverpool Sailaway and I obtained a Narrow Stile Mortise Lock from a Local Locksmith. It certainly made access from the front a whole lot easier.

  8. The answer also suggests a 'pipe stat' near the back boiler so that when the water in the tank reaches a high temperature it will turn on the pump so alleviating the problem. A good idea I think.

Having recently fitted a Pipe Thermostat on my central heating system I agree that it does control the running of the circulating pump. The pump only runs when the water temperature is above that set on the themostat. When the temperature falls the pump stops. Thus conserving battery life as the pump only runs when needed

  9. BTW does anyone know who makes Corfe grey and Ayers red coach enamel? when we bought our boat we were given some jam jars of paint for touch ups, these names are written on in felt pen...can't track it down to buy more...????

Ayres Red I believe is a shade by Masons. Don't know about Corfe Grey. Give Classic Coatings nr Loughborough a ring 01509 844151 they have Masons Paints.

  10. I've tried some putty type substance too and this wasnt that good. I'm going to try silicone next !

Caravan accessory shops sell a Mastic strip with a paper backing on a roll. On our last boat I used this to seal behind all windows, mushrooms and an Houdini hatch with excelent results, no signs of a leak.
