That is really useful thank you Robbo.
So i know to get all the batteries together and what to get
Have the Info about how to control the victron to charge with the low Output genny we have and what to get if we have to replace the genny
Two more questions:
- does it matter that the Red kippor is pure sine wave and Not msv ?
(Whatever msv is)?
- should i get an mppt controller instead of smartguage? Would an mppt Show state of charge ? Think i saw this on another thread and if so this Would move us closer to having solar to help keep batteries healthy sooner.
-
Thanks Pete, really helpful
-
Blackrose - doesnt seem to be any control to turn down victron. But there is a charger only Button.
Julynian - thanks for the link
-
I know. Its quite scary what some people come out with, told to run it from engine room too. I knew this was wrong though, just commonsense.
-
Thank you for clarfying that the genny isnt big enough.
Now need to decide if we would be able to understand how to ist
Use Software to configure the victron if that Would be wothwhile.
If Not its engine running and solar ASAP
-
Thanks Smiley Pete. Current batteries are 4 x 110ah Lucas xv. Have looked at different types of batteries but its confusing. Could you recomend something specific (a link?)

Just checked the Generator we have been given, its in fill working order and:
Red kipor Digital petrol
Iso 9001
Kge 2000tc
56.61db a
Rated Output 8.6kva
Max Output 2.00kva
Maybe its Not big enough?
The victron is 12v 3000 120
What you are doing Sounds fantastic but well beyond our capability and means atm. Good luck with it though.
Blackrose, as novices the calculations are a Bit complex but trying to take them in, thanks.
Generator currently stored in unused gas locker. Was told to store in engine room but was worried about that so moved it.
As the OP has a victron combi, if has a remote you can change what amps the generator can produce, so you don't need as big generator.
Is the remote something you can buy and bolt on?
-
What is that costing to Set up Julynian?
Think that Sounds great but may Not be affordable?
-
So batteries first, will have a look at wiring diagrams, thanks.
Have always charged via engine, but read a Generator can be used via victron combi charger. Dont want to Do this without advice first though. Not sure about remote, just have a victron box on bulkhead.

We are just about to replace 4 leisure batteries and a smart guage.
Have read lots of posts but battery expertise is not easy to achieve so we want to keep things simple at this stage, for us and the family when on board, ie a device that tells us when to charge and when to stop charging.
Two questions at this stage:
1. Cannot afford all at once. Would it be better to buy all 4 baterries then the Monitor next month, or 2 batts and Monitor then further2 batts following month?
2. If poss we want to do a good charge regularly with a Generator. Is it possible to plug a genny into the landline socket and charge through the victron multiplus 3000 inverter / charger? Is it that simple.
Checking out the Generator model and how noisy it is this week, and hopefully by the spring can get some solar to replace it.
Any advice much appreciated.

Just to give some feedback on this, it turns out the problem is the alternator that was not charging the leisure batteries. We got some help from a very helpful boater who checked the batteries and then went on a fault finding mission. All the batteries are now (temporarily) connected to the other alternator and are showing a decent reading.
Not good news and not at a good time.
The alternator was a 175 amp on a Beta 60 engine.
Any suggestions on where to look for a replacement, new or reconditioned appreciated.
-
There are some wires connected to the batteries, what are these?
-
I haven't noticed any noise from the alternator? Will check that as well tomorrow.
-
They are Lucas 110ah Xv Leisure Batteries - will get one out and check as you say tomorrow Tony.
Will also go and buy a hydrometer too.
Apart from turning off the isolation switch first and putting everything back together as it was, do you have any other advice for disconnecting / reconnecting batteries?
-
Thanks for your reply Tony. Just checked the starter battery and its fine, reading 13.2, thank goodness. The others are sealed leisure batteries. I'm going to get some help to check the batteries before doing anything else.
... turned the engine off, volt meter now reads just under 11 so no effect at all in running it for that short while.
-
If anyone can advise if it is safe to connect the generator directly to the battery terminals with crocodile clips perhaps we could try that?
-
Do feel like an idiot posting this. Maybe we already have the answer but its always good to check when learning and not really knowing what you are doing!
-
I wonder if anyone can kindly advise on this?
Our leisure batteries have been low for a while but they still power the pumps, lights, toilet flush and laptop charger, so we've just continued with them to get the last out of them.
Today when charging the No Power light came on on the inverter - laptop was charging - I noticed the toilet wouldn't flush and then heard a low beeping noise. This was coming from the control panel outside and was the domestic battery lamp which was on too.`
Looking in the engine manual it seems either the batteries are not connected, not connected correctly or they are flat.
We've had a look at the battery connectiion and they seem ok. So now we've left the engine running for a bit to see what happens and the inverter says 'Low Power' but the DC volt meter is only reading 11.
It looks like the time has come and they have finally died. Hasn't come at the best time either so if anyone does have any advice on anything to try we would be very grateful.
----
Also, last week someone loaned me a generator. He left it inside the engine room with the crocodile clips attached to the battery terminals so we could easily start it up. But somewhere on the forum this week I read that crocodile clips shouldn't be used and there might be a way of charging through the landline connector and inverter so haven't got round to using this yet.

Thanks cheshire rose, i agree the Samsung is a lovely phone and its good to know the newer versions work well. Do you store your music on them/have any kind of speaker system for them?
Maybe I shouldn't put all my eggs in one basket and just get some kind of iPod instead?
Just found this at canal shop on line:
DAB Radio/CD/MP3 Player- 12 Volt£149.95(inc VAT)Excellent quality Micro CD player/DAB radio/MP3 Player. This neat unit allows you to receive excellent digital radio signals with clear stereo sound, or play CD's or listen to your ipod or other mp3 player.
The main unit is just 170mm wide and 280mm high and 95mm deep. The speakers are 160mm wide, 280mm high and 95mm deep.
The unit comes with a power lead fitted with a cigar lighter plug as well as a further lead with transformer and 240 volt plug. It also has a remote control. The speakers can either be clipped either side of the unit or be placed up to 2m from the unit. Both the main unit and the speakers can be either wall mounted or free standing. So an MP3 player - will have to look into these as well - anyone got one?
An iPhone would fit on this too, will make some enquiries about Samsungs.
-
Also, if good at tethering, thought I could start organising my music on an iPhone - and hopefully find a 12v speaker to go with it. Anyone doing this with a Samsung, or the Sony? I'm missing my music lol.
-
Thanks, will investigate that. I'm totally reliant on the phone for all internet use so can't afford to make the wrong choice. I have an HTC phone that tethers temporarily but its just not the same - poor battery and signal.
-
Have just smashed the screen on my phone in the door Have been using a Samsung Galaxy Ace to tether on the One Plan on Three which has been great, but as i've got to get a replacement should I go for an iPhone instead? Any views on which is best gratefully received.

Can anyone recommend a gas fitter in the Uxbridge area. To install LPG cooker and gas supply pipes.
-
Afraid I don't understand "set to one bar or 15lbs per square inch) - will get a bike pump and gauge as it may be useful in the future, and maybe your measurements will become clear Bottle lol
It may well be due to frost Pete, luckily will be moored near the chandlers so will see if a compound will work as the first step.
Thanks both.
