  1. We are just in the process of finding a boat builder, seen some very nice examples and some not so nice. We have decided to up the amount we are going to spend in order that we get what we want. currently like Top Notch, Milburns & Elton Moss, we are now arranging to meet Beacon Boats as they seem to have some good reviews. We will not be arranging for a build spot before house is sold but need to do a lot of leg work now.

Did you decide on your builder? I think one of the most important things is to speak to their customers to see if they (after a couple of years) are still happy with their boat.....and have some faith......enjoy :-)

  2. Milburn Boats are fitters but use Tyler Wilson shells.......Ours was built built by Tyler Wilson and fitted out by Milburns.......we could not wish for a better home, check out this months Canal Boat magazine as they have done a feature on us. clapping.gif

  3. Hi We are John,Sally and Charlie,

Looking to buy are first boat very soon.

I know im going need loads of Qs answered please before we make the big step.

    Cheers John

Hi, We have had are our boat for 6 weeks now, we took 2 years to find out exactly what we wanted in our boat. We then took another 6 months finding the right builder. 1 tip that was given to us was "don't rush, take your time and get it right fist time and if you can, only ever but 1 boat" The people who told us this bought a boat and then 3 years later decided to have a boat built to their exact requirements but then took another year to sell their first boat delaying their retirement by a year.

  4. Hi, Wifey thinks we should invest in one of these

    http://www.leesan.com/index.asp?m=3&cat1=66&cat2=68&p=97&t=LeeSan%20Electric%20Self%20Pump%20Out%20Kit,%2012v%20DC

It's a 12V self pump out kit.......now my question is would it be acceptable to use this at an elsan point? with the cost of pump outs increasing we'd get our money back within a year but maybe others would be hacked off if we were at the elsan point for for ever how long it takes?

  5. Thanks everyone for the help and good wishes.....we needs it! I don't think we will be able to sleep tonight with the excitement.....Engine running well - check...weed hatch clean - check...lubricated the prop shaft with the thingy (pump action...forgotten what it's called)....full water tank - check...full diesel tank - check....empty waste tank - tis at the moment....batteries full - check....enough coal (bagged up into weights I can carry)to last 3 days - check......empty ash pan in the morning - check....one spare gas canister - check....several torches ready - check....ropes ready - check....mooring pins and associated bits easily available - check....thermals, waterproofs, warm hats and gloves ready - check.....all washing and drying done - check.....had a bath/shower - check....prepared meal ready to go into the haybox in the morning- check....GOSH are we going to be okay? Robbie's back is still very painful but he feels loads better and is moving around now....see you out on the cut x

  6. Can anyone tell us if our planned route is free from any stoppages or problems? This will be our first trip and we need to arrive in Weedon for our launch party on Friday. Unfortunately our Helmsman Course (for today) was cancelled and hubby has hurt his back quite badly....hey ho such is life! Any relevant news/advice would be most welcome. Many thanks.

    Suzie

  7. We popped up to Milburn to chat to Andy about maybe building our new boat this weekend and saw Swamp Frogs - she's a beautiful boat - no wonder you are so excited. We are really looking forward to seeing the pictures of her launch this Tuesday. Enjoy the big day and we wish you wonderful times ahead.

Thank you for your kind words........

We are both so pleased we got Milburns to build our boat. They really did embrace our thought's and idea's and turned our dream into a reality. The whole experience from the start with Milburns has been enjoyable. A very good team, if you do choose them I'm sure you'll get your dream boat too.

  8. congrates. we know how excited you must be having just got our boat but with the ice and floods not had a great chance to cruise the cut

Our plan is also to live aboard in the summer months next year and cruise the canals when I retire

we are on the south Grand union if your coming down we will look out for you

    Rog and Mo

We will definitely see you on the Grand Union as we'll be staying around there till after the Crick show....then slowly moving north.

We'll look out for you both.

  9. Ahhh...

I read it that you wanted to decide between Fairy, Morning Fresh, Tesco, Persil etc. hence the 'serious question' question :)

Sorry Dave, was using that just as a comparison......would just like to buy the right products that will do the least amount of harm to the lives that live "IN" the cut.

  10. There is no restriction on personal hygiene and laundry items used within your boat, however keep strong chemical cleaners etc. to an absolute minimum.

This IS a serious question, yes?

Yes Dave, This IS a serious question......what I am looking for is the most "chemically free" "eco friendly" brands that I can use.

  11. My Wife put this in "New to Boating" I thought I'd put it in here too.........Not long now......... :clapping:

Just needed to say....our new boat "Swamp Frogs" should be ready early February.

We designed every detail ourselves and she is looking lovely. Hubby retires on 4th March (after 34 years at the same company).....boat in the water mid February....move aboard....sort out any snags....get to know our new home....then party on the 30th March...everyone stays overnight...breakfast on 31st then off we go! Continuously cruising the beautiful canals.....how great is that? Just wanted to share it with you all...see you out there x

  12. All those are allowed to go into the canal (rightly or wrongly). Just about the only thing that isn't, is your toilet. Which is where I can help, if you where on the K&A...

I understand they are all allowed to go straight into the Canal it's the "makes of" I'm looking for......I mean can I use Fairy bio washing powder or should I use Fairy Non bio washing powder or should it be Tesco's own brand........can you see what I mean....

  13. Hi Peeps.....

I've read a thread on this before but I am asking the question again just to confirm what to use as we do not want to get it wrong.

    What types/makes of.....

    1. shower gel

    2. washing up liquid

    3. liquid soap

    4. Washing powder

    5. Shampoo

    6. Conditioner

    7. Multi purpose cleaner (for cleaning sink etc)

.....should we use? Obviously we need to get this right. Is there any else we've missed that goes straight into the cut that we need to specifically use?

  14. I use tea lights (cut in half - two fires per tea light) wrap the wax loosly with newspaper.

Place homemade firelighter, in the centre, on top of kindling (to catch any escaping wax) more kindling on top making a wax bomb sandwich; add in some decent sized wood at the top and light the paper.

tealights are 100 for £1 in ikea.

Not bothered with coal yet but i'm sure the system can be adapted.

This is an old post on this thread......will it really work? Don't yet have a stove to try it out myself.

  15. Thanks Cher.....the name is even more apt then since my husband is a fiddler plays the fiddle.

Rubble Queen....oh my goodness...realization hits...must drive you nuts? We still have time to change it I suppose?

When we first started looking for a builder I thought it was funny to tell everyone that we were calling our boat "The Swingers"......noone would wave and say good morning would they? One couple that we met and had lunch with have not responded to any emails or texts as a result.......hey if that upset them then  twas only a joke!
