Used to use SuperTherm but found it was inconsistent and produced lots of ash so didn't stay in well. using PureGlow now but still find variances in the bags. It has been reported that the bonding agent wasn't doing its job and so nuggets were breaking up more than usual. Many a time bags are found to have wet coal n them, be it because its stored in th open and the damaged bag lets rain in or the coal was wet when bagged

Like a lot of things everyone will have their own personal opinion on what's best. We have limited experience (as many others also have) but you have to consider the installation costs and the running costs for heating systems and the comfort level you want.
We have a solid fuel burner and only use coal. this costs about £2 a day to run and is in 24*7 from mid October to April this keeps us nice and warm and supplies 2 radiators and warms up the hot water (I'm not going to say its hot enough for a shower but hot enough for most other things, washing up can be supplemented by a hot kettle) We time showers and using the washing machine for when the engine has been running.

Do like I do. Put your bags of coal on the Stb side

I'm happy that the prop and propshaft are not damaged but will check when putting it back together that the two are matched. Some good tips in the link Jim posted. (post #61) in particular dry fitting without the key in first and a bit of grinding paste.
ETA I got the names the wrong way around in the pics above. Pete was the brave one.

Well, Pete and Dave came down from Coventry Sub Aqua Club this morning to look for my prop
Dave was diving and Pete was acting as safety
Dave on his way in
Success
They did try and see if they could find the nut as well but that was too tall an order. It was lost in all the rubbish in the bottom of the wharf.
So big thanks to Dave and Pete.
Going to find a dry dock now to put it all back together. Thanks all for your comments, suggestions and support.

I'm assuming that this is the "Rose of Yorkshire" that was for sale on Appolo Duck and berthed at Sawley.
If so then the spec says that " New sterling battery charger fitted in 2014 along with Galvanic Isolater." but no mention of if that's a combi with inverter so maybe non fitted
-
Update:- Got a couple of divers coming to help tomorrow to do a fingertip search (no not searching for finger tips before anyone says it ) so a good chance of retrieving the prop but I think finding the nut will be a tall order
-
Or just a stainless split pin?
I don't think the pin was stainless and that was the problem. I have tried with a keb but my pole isn't long enough. only came with a 6ft pole. I have a 4mtr pole on order so will swap the head over and try again.
Thanks for all the suggestions and support so far. I'll keep you posted

Mine had a split pin through a castellated nut, I think the problem has been that the split pin has either corroded away or has been snagged on the rubbish that has been caught on the prop at times and has broken. I think I will be putting a tab washer and split pin on this time, followed by a lock nut, a shot of glue, some gaffer tape and jubilee clip
Still not found the prop. Tried a spot light on a pole under water last night but the silt has been stirred up by the windy conditions as late so its just a murky mess. Managed to look at the prop shaft and that's all ok ans the slit pin hole is clear.
Will there be standard size nuts for different prop-shaft sizes?? mine's 30mm (1 1/4 inch in old money)

Is the slipway at the basin not suitable Richard? If we could get some rollers under Avalon that might help. We'd need a winch, who's got a Landy with a winch?
Do be wary going in the cut at Swan Lane, there be dragons and a lot of glass. Keith might be able to help.
I could tow Avalon to Charity Wharf for you but I'm in Wales and so would need some notice - say a day or so?
Dont worry no intention of getting in the cut. The slipway can be used and it was one of my thoughts to back the boat in till it grounds so I am only working in a couple of feet of water. Seeing Keith in the morning so will see if he has any more ideas.
I've contacted the local dive club to see if the can help retrieve the prop. Just waiting on a reply

In answer to the title, start paddling or find a passing horse.
Seriously though RLWP of this parish is good at these things:

If you need help with transport P.M. me.
Thanks for the offer Ray. Only transport needed would probably be a tow

Where are you?

If I could get in the water I would but as its around 6ft deep I would only do that with full dive gear on. So a BSAC may be a good Idea, they appear to have a local branch in Coventry.
I don't think that the prop is capable of being found using a magnet ( don't think phosphor bronze is magnetic, is it?)
and even less chance of finding the nut.
That was an interesting extension to your wrench Richard and as you said would have a job getting the nut tight still in the water.
Any Idea on local dry docks? I think Rose Narrowboats are the closest but that's still a fair way to paddle
-
Well I suppose it could have been worse. Was just leaving the marina when there was a "ding" and no propulsion.
A quick check down the weed hatch and confirmed that the prop had fallen off but at least it didn't happen in the middle of nowhere.
Been prodding around but not located it yet but even if I do and can manage to retrieve it I very much doubt that I would be able to get it on while still in the water due to the fact that the key which fits in the slot in the prop shaft and then aligning the nut to get the split pin in would be at arms length and the chances of dropping them or not getting them in properly would be quite high.
Anyone tried this in the water or can give any advice. I'm about a mile north of Coventry if there are any engineers out there that want to bid for the task.
Thanks

Thanks Alan, was just wondering if one or the other (if it does matter) would be better at shock loading when the anchor is deployed

I went down the old canal bed underground a couple of years ago and it was a very interesting trip. They are doing building work at the moment so cant get down at the moment. If your ever in Manchester is a must do tour. http://www.newmanchesterwalks.com/walks-tours/underground-other-unusual-things/underground-manchester/

Just to update. We got an oven thermostat at the weekend and done some testing and it would seem that the oven is getting too hot. So after setting the oven at each Gas Mark and checking against the temperature we now have a new scale to use. Now using GM2 instead of 3. Not tested it out on heavy cakes but lovely chocolate sponge cake enjoyed on Sunday

Dont shout too loud or they will realise a mistake and put it up again (hope not though for you)

I have a 57ft narrowboat and looking to fit an anchor for when do the rivers.
I'm aware of all the info on lengths and types etc but the question is what size chain and rope to use as I haven't seen anything that addresses this.
I wont be using a winch so high spec chain wont be required.
Not only what size but where to get them from without breaking the bank, yes I know its a safety item so shouldn't skimp.
couple of links, any comments

Turners would be good but we are heading towards Middlewich with a diversion to Nantwich, got half a tank so okay for a couple of weeks max, don't like it to get too low but resent paying top price when oil has dropped in price
This is a list of places you might want to look at. Some are out of date but at least you can see if they are near where you are going and can give them a call to check out latest prices.
http://diesel.fibrefactory.co.uk/
List of fuel boats as well
http://www.lock13.co.uk/boats/coaldiesel.htm
As above some of the data may be out of date but gives you a starter
Once you have a price (non tax price) use this calculator to see how much it should cost you
Good luck

As the title really, we are leaving our winter mooring in Llangollen & pottering along towards the shroppie, will need a top up sometime in the next couple of weeks or so, any suggestions
Don't know how soon you need topping up but it would seem that Turners Garage (yes a garage) at bridge 19 on the SU is generally one of the cheapest. They have a pontoon on the right just before the bridge that you can moor on. Its about 77 miles from where you are
What to do when your prop falls off !!

Both the above are already on my agenda and for the same reasons as you have both pointed out. (Great minds, and all that)
There is talk of getting the equipment to be able to block off (slots for stop planks are already in place) and pump out our wet dock so will not need to find another yard.
