13 long pages of reading this topic when I should be sleeping soundly in my bed.
I met Mr SS as I came out of the lock after arriving in Castlefield Basin this year. The lock gate wasnt even shut before taking his picture, telling me the new rules and giving me his business card. Tried to tell him I was aware of all the changes but still went on till he had finished his speech.
When stopping for water on the Bridgewater I was told that he had been in the water and on the end of someones fist on more than one occasion. The other thing I was told was that he allegedly doesnt give receipts for any monies taken and advised me that if I was in the situation that I was asked for any monies from Sony then ask for an invoice to be sent. apparently nothing ever arrives. Wonder why.

Great answer, almost entirely likely to be totally wrong!
Are you back in Cov, Pete?
Richard
Thats why I gave him the link as well Richard so he could take it or leave it.
Just back in Cov for a few days as we are going up to Preston for a wedding, then back out till the end of the month. We will be in Cov then till April.

Hello I have a norman 23 and it has a Enfield Z drive, I am sometimes having a problem where the reverse lever gets very stiff and hard to put in gear, then followed by a clump and engine cuts off.
I don't go from forward to reverse in one movement I allow time for the prop to stop, so it's always forward - pause - reverse.
The clump sound is very off putting followed by dead in the water.
I have only had the boat since may this year, and I need to add sometimes it goes in reverse without any problem.
Can anyone advise?
The Engine is a thornycroft 108
Not sure if this helps but found it on another site.
"What you will probably find to be the problem is marine growth on your trim pin (the bit the reverse hook hooks over) this will hold the reverse hook up and not let the lock pin slide underneath thus not letting you select reverse have a look at my website www.shipshape.uk.net"

For balance, we regularly moor in the town centre, and I can't recall ever having had a problem.
I'm surprised if there are only 2 or 3 moorings between the "shop and stop" and the bridge that allow 14 day mooring. It has always seemed more than that to me, but I've never counted, I admit.
Alan, the VM's before the bridge used to be the service moorings for water, but that is under the bridge now. So thats why there is only a short length

When I had my boat blacked last time the yard used a high pressure water jet to clean the old stuff off. At least it may get a good proportion off for you

I'm with the magnet vote, but thinking in reverse, how about something that pushes the door open.
Advantage is nothing on the outside.
Disadvantage, will depend on space and what force they will exert. Might just give you an idea though http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WHITE-Surface-Mounted-Spring-Arm-AUTOMATIC-DOOR-CLOSER-/191194961491

There is a fuel/coal etc boat started up around Burghfield to Newbury area. Don't know his contact details but might be worth asking any of the more local resident boaters . Sorry can't help anymore than that , just saw him as we left the k and a .Bunny
Just a thought .... how about Tesco at Reading , if not the shop maybe the petrol station , if it's coal that your looking for . Further up the K and A there is abc at aldermaston Bunny
Thanks for those. I'll pass that on. I was thinking that Somewhere like B&Q would be the answer in the short term

Does Better Boating still sell diesel?
Probably but they are on the Thames. I'm asking for friends that are on the K&A. Its coal thats needed
-
Anyone know if there are any fuel boats on the K&A around Reading at the moment
Yes I have looked at Lock 13

If it's the Andy Russell Gunwale Black, it also dries in 20 minutes, which is a big advantage when repainting that area.
Yes that's the stuff. and yes forgot to mention the quick drying so no need to keep it dry for a couple of days like blacking
-
But "better finish" means "different finish". Why do you want the top part of you hull to look different from the rest?
If I remember correctly (and if its the same story about the paint) the idea is that if you touch up with normal paint or blacking you get patches that show up. With this "special" paint it matt's down quickly and matches the original coating so it doesn't look all patchy. Don't think it has any other advantages.

Yup, been there. Take the door off, take the rope out and attack the groove with a rotary wire brush on a power drill. You will find that though it looks like you have a manufactured curve at the bottom of the groove it will come out in huge lumps to reveal a much deeper groove.
As above but Also some ropes benefit from removal of the inner core that runs through the middle of the rope.....
Cheers
Gareth
This is what I had to do with one rope we bought.
After removal it was still tight but I left the door shut for a couple of weeks we were not using the stove and it settled it nicely. After that it was a good seal but the door could shut with no problem.
Thanks for that, Looks like a new piece of rope and then employing the above. Will try it without the glue first

Has anyone had a problem with replacing the rope in the door of a morso 1410 stove.
I removed the old and cleaned out the channel, applied the glue and fitted the rope. Then I couldn't close the door.
The rope was 8mm which is as specified in the documentation and the size the chandlers gave me when I asked for door rope for a morso 1410
The open end of the door was about an inch and a half and the rope didn't want to compress at all.
Any sensible suggestions as to what was wrong

I'm sure I read that if you are selling a house that has an EOG mooring that you can not guarantee CRT will let the new owner have one as well. I'm no expert so dont slate me if I have it wrong.
ETA DOR beat me to it

Got no pictures, but when you need a quick way of doing an eye slice.
This is for 3 stranded rope not braided.
Make the loop the size you want but leave an extra 9 - 12 inches of loose end.
Where the intersection of the loop is, twist the rope so you can open one strand on the main part of the rope and feed the loose end through to make the loop
Move 3 inches along the main part away from the loop and do the same again
Move 3 more inches and do the same again.
This isnt the neatest of eye splices but is simple and surprisingly strong when tension is applied. The one big advantage is that it can be undone and a different size made quickly. I use it on my fenders and by using a large loop the loose end can be pulled through to adjust the length required each time you moor.
Hope the description doesn't confuse you. Give it a try you may find it useful

Did you try 0000? it may not have any number set and its still in factory set mode.

Got my primary filter (WS180) from here http://www.yachtboatparts.com/vetus-fuel-filter-element-kc441-for-ws180-and-ws720-4127-p.aspcost £9.99 +vat
The other fuel and oil filter from filter solutions cost for them was £14.44 +vat for the set of 3
ETA I have a Vetus engine so saved a fortune

Which do you use? the normal (for doors and windows) or the multi surface which includes metal?

this is a picture of the prop during the boat survey, looks like it doesn't have those holes.
good call tho
I'm going to measure the prop radius this weekend and see if there is a way to read any numbers stamped on it
oops sorry didn't attach the picture!
You could try using something like this to read the numbers on the prop. Probably worth a couple of quid to save you messing about

it is a bit of a problem. If the pontoon is full where instead? or would anyone just breast up?
You can moor on the opposite bank (which is technically the tow path) During the day I would see no issue but in the evening there is quite a lot of activity on that side. I'm not saying that there is lots of trouble as I was only there for 2 days and I have spoken to someone that has moor towpath side a few times and had no issue.
-
Has the ermm... "Broken Down" boat that was moored there last summer moved on yet?
I hope so. Its so restricted there for room that I was tempted to move it to the end of the pontoon against the wall. If its the same boat, no name, Licence or registration number and looked like it had been there for months.

Is there a way of checking battery capacity if they are wet sealed or gel type?

Ok
1. "him" is Sonny
2. Why not great advice?
3. This is based on Sonny being the person asking for money
And just to add, If I was asked for any payments by any official then I would only give an email address for the invoice to be sent. Even for the police on the spot fines you don't pay them, you effectivly get an invoice
