  1. Is there anyone moored in a marina being charged for a jetty they don't occupy? For example, a marina with 50 foot jetties allow a 57 foot boat to moor at the jetty and then charge for a 60 foot boat. The reason I ask is that I know of a marina that does this so for a 57' boat the jetty ends 7' before the end of the boat making exit from that end very difficult and for last year that was also about £160 for three foot of water in front of the boat.

  2. All this talk of court action is bad news always even if the court finds in favour of CRT its money wasted that should go to the infrastructure, the National Trust doesn't find itself going to court as often as CRT and their portfolio must be similar in size.

  3. If you have facebook look up Heidi Manning she runs a trade boat selling nick nacks talk to her I'm sure she can put your mind at rest. Personally I can't see any reason why it should make any difference male or female as far as operating the boat is concerned.

  4.

Yes, I have, but apart from the difficulty of finding a second person (which the hiring companies seem to require), I would like to have someone I could ask questions to and just observe how they live in general.

In the days when I hired narrowboats I asked the hire company if they had a problem with single handed hire and the answer was no problem, of course if you went on a one day helmsman course you would meet like minded people also embarking on this adventure. I chose fox narrowboats at March which shouldn't be too far from you.

  5. A Beta43 has big alternators and maybe a Travelpower. The alternators sap a lot of power when working hard and even when not working hard, if you have 3 alternators that is 3 fans pushing air around and creating drag. Also with 43hp to play with you might be using 3 hp to chug gently along a shallow canal or 30hp to thrash up a river.

All that said we find about 1.7 litres an hour on the canals at 1300rpm but we are heavy electrical consumers.

Remember that with diesels it is best not to run the fuel too low as there is often some crud in the bottom of the tank and with low fuel, this all sloshes around and can then get sucked up into the fuel system. I'd suggest not going below 1/4 full.

I get 1.7 ltrs perhour out of mine including diesel heating and some time charging batteries.

  6. I have just done from Keadby to shardlow, take the lockie's advice and all will be well. I did Keadby to Torksey and the following day Torksey to Cromwell. Make sure your engine has been serviced and your fuel is clean, the books say you will need a VHF radio but nobody checked and providing the winds not too strong you should have an enjoyable trip. I had squalls with hail but I survived :-)

  7. Take notice of the state of the river boards as you are new to it only go they are green, have an anchor (preferably attached to the boat), if you intend mooring at a jetty do so travelling up stream in other words turn the boat to face upstream and adjust your speed to come in to the mooring slowly. Think ahead plan what you are going to do before you get there, have fun.
