  1. I grew up with alcoholic parents, smoking, drinking and fighting was the norm to me. My dad never had a day off work, retired at 60 and died of bowel cancer 2 years later, I feel due to the fact that he had more time to drink and smoke as he was at home all day.

My mother had breast cancer at 53 years old. She has just had her 80th birthday this year. She still smokes roll ups, has a Guinness every day.

My younger brother followed my parents way of life and drunk himself to death age just 44 years old, 7 years ago.

My older brother never smoked a cigarette in his life but does like a drink, but is not an alcoholic.

I smoked on and off but never drank to excess.

My son never drank to excess, but did smoke cigarettes and dope. I tried not to keep nagging him about it. He stopped smoking dope when his daughter was born 10 years ago. I was so proud of him as I knew that he enjoyed it. He said it helped him relax.

He still smoked roll ups though.

I lost my son to lung cancer last September age 34 years . It has been the worst year of my life and everyone on this forum is someone's child,

If I could turn back the clock, I would thrash him and stop him from smoking.

It is a debate that will go on for many a year, we have to take responsibility for our own actions but who knows what is right or wrong, life threatening or not?

All I know is that I cry most days and nights for my only child and wish things were different.

  2. In which case, all you can hope is that the seller is honest if they have finance. We bought our boat from a couple who had finance on it, they asked for two cheques, one for Roy Scott Larch for the outstanding finance and one for the seller for the rest. As far as I know there are very few companies who do finance on boats.

  3. We borrowed our neighbours ig2600 in an emergency and were so impressed we bought the IG3000.... Big mistake if you are looking to carry one around easily..it was far too big and took a lot of room up in the back cabin. We sold it on good old eBay and hubby says best value for money is IG2600, easy to carry and this is what we will be getting next time

  4. Sorry to hear this, people say it's all for a reason, but when you have your heart set on a dream, it hurts more, get saving, don't have presents for birthdays etc, ask for money towards your dream boat. Good luck. We were fortunate to be able to buy our boat outright. You will be on the water one day if you want it bad enough.

    Best wishes

  5. We picked up our new boat yesterday (Yay!). It has twin diesel tanks. The vendor said we must only put white diesel in the heating tank otherwise the Webasto will clog up and die. Is there any truth in this ? Getting hold of white diesel canalside isn't very easy.

We have only used red in ours and works perfectly . Get it serviced regularly too and if you can do that yourself, even better.

  6. No apology needed, most of us would assume a marina has diesel, its just we're actually in the lock island and its something to do with transferring fuel over water. (I'm sure someone will know all the legal requirements and technical difficulties of this, but I'm just the cleaner! ;-) )

Rules and regs, where would we be without them ...

  7. Sorry, we don't sell diesel at northampton marina. You're best bet is to catch Bletchley.

Just to add, Northampton Marina is just a marina and services, no chandlery or shops, although you can get your EA navigation key and river license here!

Apologies, didn't know you don't have diesel..

  8. On Monday morning we will be passing through Northampton on the Nene then on up to Gayton. The thing is we are a bit short of diesel. Canal plan reckons it's 5.75 hours cruising from where we are to Gayton and I'm not sure we've got enough. I've dipped the tank and we've got about 5" left. This being a new (to us) boat means I don't know if that's enough. Is there anywhere in Northampton that sells diesel?

PS Hate the guillotine locks on the Nene!

We saw you going through Ditchford lock today, hubby said what a lovely colour boat you have. If you have gone passed billing turn, you have Northampton marina at Becketts Park and then by the carlsberg building Morrisons is walking distance and they have a petrol station.

  9. Just wondered if anyone here might know of 'good' narrowboats for sale - someone I know is looking for one. Roughly 45' to 55' (perhaps 60?). A boat that is genuinely for sale by people who have looked after it, all certificates (hull survey & BSS, etc.)(and work such as blacking, engine maintenance) to be VERY up-to-date and everything in pristine condition.

Hopefully this isn't an invalid question here in this Forum 'room'. Looking at sites such as Appalling Duck you never really know what's what, engine condition and so on.

Perhaps nothing will come of this but I thought I'd ask and could send links/info onwards. Was just an idea to see if I could help....

Have a look on... Facebook... Narrow boats for sale uk site

  10. We are remodelling our kitchen and have bought a shoreline 12v fridge/ freezer, we were very lucky to bid and win it on eBay,it was bought for use in a beach hut but never used, it cost us £300. We were going to get another 240 one but just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

  11. We love living on our boat, when we lived in our house, we could not wait to get on the boat ( at the time I worked four days on,four days off) the four days off were spent on the boat, and we were always reluctant to go home to the house.

When OH dissolved his company we made the decision to make a new start, sold the house, moved on to the boat full time and have not regretted it for one second.

  12. It is horrible that in this sad sorry world we live in, nothing is safe anymore. When we go up on the cut for our break we do not leave our boat unattended in remote places. On our break last year, we moored at Yelvertoft and were visited by the local police who were looking for a person who had broken into three boats in a matter of two weeks along a short length of towpath( between the three bridges which all have roads )

We had not seen anything untoward, but it did make us nervous.

We went on to Market Harborough and stayed at the VM so were happy to leave the boat while we went into town.

When we go up on the cut this year I will not be working for the six weeks, so that we can at least relax and not worry about leaving the boat unattended in remote areas or any dodgy looking places.

One year on a trip to Banbury from Rugby, we passed two boats that had been broken into, we informed CRT ( was then BW) who said they would inform the owners.

Unfortunately these kind of things happen and can only hope the victims do not suffer too much damage or loss.

  13. Thanks for all the tips re Northampton Arm - should be there on 12th April...

I wonder where this obstacle will be by then (email just arrived from the EA):

    "

    EMERGENCY

    RESTRICTION NOTICE

Section 15 Anglian Water Authority Act 1977

Please be aware there is a very large tree stump afloat in the navigation, downstream of Ditchford Lock. Please take care when navigating in this area. "

Hopefully on its way to Thrapston!! I walked the dogs to higham lock yesterday, didn't see it then,

Sorry to hear he's been bothering you that certainly not acceptable. You should be able to block his number on your phone or report the calls to your phone company.

I can see he could be intimidating. Fortunately I'm big enough to throw him off if I had to. Had I known his history I would have told him to sling his hook. He seemed a happy friendly guy - I obviously caught him on a good day as he was clearly sober. He did say CRT are applying for an ASBO because some people have complained about him.

We had offered to drop some camping gear off to him as we felt sorry for him, but by the time we got to Wellingborough and the amount of texts, that gesture went out of the window.. When we go up on the cut, we plan to leave our mooring at first light so hopefully will be up on the cut by the end of day 1 and hopefully miss him.

Meggers, i totally agree with you but we have had people come into the marina who said they didn't like that he offered 'help' then stood with his hand out asking for £30 at the end, and it has put them off coming down the arm again.

Can understand how they feel uncomfortable, we certainly will be wary of him now.

  14. I don't hand money over to beggers on the street but I felt Leon earned his. He did a good 3hrs work locking me through, did it very well and knew what he was doing. And he was quite entertaining, even if most his stories were bs. I felt he earned a fiver. What he does with it is his choice.

I find it ironic that we set moral standards for the homeless saying they will only waste the few bob they get on booze yet don't mind buying records from pop stars and DVDs from film stars who stuff thousands of pounds worth of narcotics into their bodies. Just my two penneth

We will help anyone in need.we gave him £70 and was hoping that he would spend it wisely, what he spent it on is his business, but he kept text me, first with jokes, then asking for help, when I text back to say that we did not expect to keep in touch on a personal basis and that we exchanged numbers so that we could get him to help us up the locks in the spring. He started getting nasty and threatening violence ( as he likes a drink I know people with a drink problem can turn) I asked him not to text anymore, he then started saying he was going to kill himself. I ignored his texts

The last text he said he was in hospital with a heart attack, which I assume was not true. My friend and I were upset at his texts as he was so pleasant on the flight down.

I got a text just before Xmas quite out of the blue from him asking how we were, I ignored it. Once bitten twice shy ....

  15. he does live in the barns there, he went into great detail telling us that the farmer is replacing the roof and in so doing depriving him of his home. He also said he was on the council list but they will only offer him a house that no-one else wants!!???

i will give him a cuppa, i will give him food, i will give him a ciggy, when he stands there with his hand out i will give him a slap!

oh, and we've given him a windlass too :-\

He told us the same last May, I wish I had been as sensible as you and not given him any money, and we gave him a windlass too :-)

  16. Sorry I misheard him his name is Leon. A Geordie who told me he lives in a barn near the top of the flight. Seemed sober enough to me and did a good job locking me up all 16.

Yes that is the same one, he did a good job taking us down, however I made the big mistake of giving him my phone number... Won't go into details, just crossing fingers we don't see him on our way up to the cut in the spring...
