    ST2 v's SR2

If it spins the prop faster on tick over how does this make it go dead slow? Hi Tim I have read over your post several times and I still can't get what you are saying is it that the prop will slip or are you saying the rpm will cause the prop to give more drag leaving it short of hp?

Some would say I am 3 or 4 of me but I don't think they would mean in strength. How hard or complcated is it to change one of these from fixed speed to variable?

This is starting to sound good, can I strip the engine down enough to man handle it out of the boat or am I being silly?

Would I be right in assuming that the air cage manifold thing with the gear box on would bolt onto a ST2 the same? From what I can make out with my gearbox it would not matter which way the engine spun it just determines which way I push the lever to go forward. Would what ever connects the gearbox shaft to the engine be the same for both engines? I really don't know alot about this do I, never mind I have learned to type quicker.

You are right Bizzard all is right for an SR2 on my boat as its only a 36 footer and propped for the SR2 its just that I can't find a good one and I do want to go on the Trent.

Hi Bizzard, why would you choose one over the other and which one?

Is one better than the other, do they perform as well as each other is one easier to maintain than the other. Just looking for peoples thoughts.
  8. Hi Bizzard do you think that lowering the pitch will give the engine more get up and go. Please do not think that I am a speed merchant or anything like that, but 3 miles an hour is tops and as i have said before if I go for any more it just bogs down and over heats. I do live just up from Torksey where you go onto the Trent but I would not think of doing this as I fear the current would just take me where it wanted. Cheers Grace & Favour tried that but no firm answer it just has nothing on it to give anyone a clue.
  9. That is a good question but one I can't answer.
  10. Thanks for that Springer that is what I am doing looking and listening. The engine I have in what ever it is is some sort of industrial unit so I hope to rob alot of the bolt on bits from it but the variations out there seem endless. Its a shame the engine I have just doesn't have enough in it to push the boat along at an acceptable pace. There is no way I can venture onto the Trent.
  11. Thank you very much for that info Micky44 I would have never thought that there was no ring in there, just saw the housing and blank and assumed it just needed a motor fitting. I am not the best at making something from something else but with the right knowledge I can make a good effort which is why I started this thread. Yes in an ideal world I would go to Chris B and get all the right bits and stand very proud on the rear deck but alas I was bourn poor and have remained so, but when it works it feels good.
  12. If I am right then there is not a real problem with doing this its just some engineering problems to over come. There just seems to be the problem of the starter motor or the lack of one though there appears to be a blank over the position where one would go. I have seen the thread on how many teeth one needs but how do you determine what starter when you don't have one to start with.
  13. I am looking at a dumper truck engine so I assume it will rev up, as for how good it is God knows beggers can't be choosers and believe me I am a begger one step below skint.
  14. To help with your groveling could you explain what you mean by the filter housing thing please.
  15. Hi all what are the problems and pitfalls of fitting an industrial Lister over a marinised one, and indeed what is a marinised engine other than the obvious. My question is aimed at the SR2.

Think I will go for a new lift pump just to be sure, anybody wish to make a stab at which one to go for I won't hold it against you.

Got you Les when its back together I will do what Bizzard said to see if thats pumping.

No Les I have not tried the old one back as I think it was leaking into the sump as for the tappet thing I have no idea what you are refering to.

Now I think we are getting silly Robin what would the ducks say to a tractor pull engined narrow boat. Thanks Les for that mine sort of pulls it through the water but it does sound very nice. Just wondering Bizzard if you have something there because under fueling is what Les was sort of thinking when he was tinkering not the engineering term I know, he did expect more fuel from the leak off.

Have you fitted it in the boat Les or did you want to try it in mine?

I have PMed ChrisB but not sure if I am doing it right I never heard back from him the last time I did it, but it is most likely me.

They are very similar numbers to mine Robin and I do appreciate your efforts, there is nothing on the other side of mine.I know I am not allowed to assume but if I base it on the lesser of the two engines will I not be covered for all eventualities?

Ok all, so would I be right in assuming its either a SL or LR and working on a 10 horse engine and getting a prop that best suits that format. Don't fancy the thought of going back down the weed hatch and doing all that again, it was cold then now its iced over! Such a waste of money and effort, still hope someone learns from this and does not take it as read that they have a certain engine without a thumbs up from the experts. Which is what I think Roger is saying but it still smarts when told.

Sorry Roger but why do you think I would lie about getting the prop sized, I went to Crowthers and gave them the information they asked from what I believed to be correct Yes I was wrong but I did not know this at the time, this has emerged from a lot of people on here giving me good advice and the likes of Bizzard putting in alot of effort trying to get to the bottom of this.
