has anyone got a louis ranger stove installed in there NB
if so are there any good for a NB.

These particular moorings have service bollards with water and electric , so why go to the trouble of building them in the first place ?
Might be a condition of the planning permission from local councils so there could build beside the canal.

If it's my boat my partner will just have to put up with me
On a more serious note, I was a little surprised in reading this thread, so it seems to me that if you buy a boat & intend to use the stove it's a good idea to pull off the tiles & see whats behind whether is got a BSS or not. This is something I wouldnt have thought about. Up until now I just assumed these things were built properly & thats why they are on a raised hearth with surrounding tiles.
The code of practise only covers new stoves installed after March 2011
Shortest distance from the back of the stove to the heat shield is now 95mm
And it further recommends that stoves should not be installed next to stepped entrances
There was a good article in the may issue of waterways world on BSS code of practise for stove installations.
Called is your stove safe.

Congratulations pet
If you are still looking for a winter mooring have you tried British waterways winter mooring auction site?

Happened to me once, when jump-starting the van one morning. I was very lucky not to be covered in acid, as I was standing right beside it. As it was, just hosed everything down, replaced the battery and set off for market.........
It’s all ways handy to have a squeeze bottle of slightly salty water at hand near your battier box in case of emergencies.
Saline solution is best to clean out the eye which is the most delicate part of the face.

Eeps. Well my new boat (that I have not yet got) has a stove on it, which I actually love the idea of. I assume it is of the correct and safe dimensions as the boat just passed it's BSS.
Is ther eanything I can do to make sure I minimise the risk of using it? (I don't actually know how to use it at all yet!) Also can I buy just a regular house smoke alarm, or are they not suitable for boats?
Thank you!
I would check your stove surrounds and make sure that between the tiles and the carcass of the boat I had fire resistive product similar to

My understanding is the new BSS code of practise for solid fuel stoves is only for new installation of stoves and does not cover any old installations.

I guess really I want to know if there's a legitimate cause of fires being more common on boats, or if that is just my misperception...
If it's just a case of be careful if you smoke or use candles and don't leave the hob on, then thats fine because it's the sme as at home.
But if it's more vulnerable to fire due to the electrics or stove... I dunno, it's not going to stop me, but I'd like to know. Forewarned being forearmed, and all that.
Fire on boats have the same causes as fire in house
The owner
As long as you maintain both correctly and fireproof around stoves
And are carefully with naked flames
And watch chip pans
That only leaves acts of god (if you are so inclined to blame him)

Did you notice fires cause by faulty electrics has increased over the years as well as petrol
Both or greater than fire caused by stoves , so I think as there is many ways a fire can start , the first thing to make sure is we have at least two fire alarms\ co2 alarms

All diesel thickens, how much depends on the feedstock as much as its colour. One could assume that in days gone by red diesel used a less expensive feedstock than white. But these days the majority comes from the same big tanks with the colour and other markers being added when the delivery tanker is loaded.
Bob18 is correct it’s all the same diesel.
Several years ago you could remove the dye by passing it through fuller’s earth but nowadays there is a chemical marker placed in red diesel along with the dye which can be detected in the exhaust gases

Not used them or heard of them but I see the offer ran out 6 months ago and the web has not been updated.
Edit: just found another My link, you must really want it to pay that much.
Does seem a lot of money. But I suppose if you get a good connection every time no matter where you are , and you depend on the internet for business I suppose it worth it, but I think I will wait till someone has tried for a year before I rush out and sign up.

I’ve been fishing for over 40 years and have taught my 3 sons to fish.
I still fish in the so called old fashion ways.
To me the enjoyment is in not catching fish but in the pleasure of trying too.
I do not think its fishing when useing equipment or methods that guarantee you fish, you may as save you money and go to the fish mongers.
On the other hand to caught a fish by skill that enjoyment.

On stillwaters, including the canals, you can only take fish (up to the number stipulated on the licence) with the permission of the landowner or owner of the fishing rights.
I'm assuming that BW or the angling clubs who lease the rights, haven't given permission then they are thieves, whatever their nationality.
if you are interested the following link tells where and what fish you can take.

How is one supposed to remove and prevent limescale build-up on glass shower cubicles?
My glas quadrant is looking awful. Am I supposed to wipe it over with vinegar or something?
What do other people in hard water areas do?
Normally I use Mr Muscle shower shine, which works well
But when lime scale builds-up (normaly due to running out and forgetting to buy a new bottle) I use a lemon cut in halve with white vinegar
And that shifts really stubborn lime scale.

Hi all.
I normally load my van up the night before I drive to the boat so I can get away before the traffic starts, but just lately my alarm wont work so I have to load up on the day which means I get away late. If I move the van away from my house the alarm works properly and sometimes it woks on my drive to. Has anyone got any ideas. Thanks Colin
Not so long ago I had a problem with the immobilizer on my car and it turned out to be a sensor on the steering column and it also only happened now and again. So I would check with someone who knows you make of you van but of course not the dealer

Would you not have salvage rights as one might for recovering a shopping trolley lost at sea?
Under UK law, both flotsam and jetsam, (goods washed and thrown overboard respectively), remain the legal property of the original owner. (Remember the ship’s cargo which was washed up on a beach)
so as been said the trolleys or any other scrap, still belong to the owner, I suppose you will have to come to an agreement with them first, unless it’s a hazard to navigation then bw and its agents have the responsibility to remove it, if the owner for what ever reason fails to do so.
Hope this helps

Hi everyone
I was not sure where to post this but if this is any help.......... we have just bought a Remoska cooking gadget from Lakeland Plastics and it is quite unbelievable in its simplicity and the recipes are something else!
it cooks from above not from below and we have the size that cooks for 4 people (there is a bigger one - 8 people!)
Power is 450w and it has greatly reduced our dependency on the oven. Saving more money.
Cost is about £130 - see Lakeland Plasctics web site
SWMBO swears by it.
look a little like a slow cooker, does it operate in the sameway

The small percentage figures involved in the split debate could be argued down to a few pence per litre. Any investigation that could prove that a boater is claiming more then they should would take months, they would have to be followed and monitored daily noting engine running times and cruising times, there's no other way they can get that information unless collated by the boaters them selves, those types of investigations would cost tens of thousands of pounds to investigate and prosecute let alone the legal costs, all this to prosecute one boater, even HMRC with money to burn will do the maths and realise that the thousands of drops they would hope to discourage the costs involved in doing so would never give any pay back. Especially when there are much bigger fish to fry, with far bigger returns.
I do not know if this would apply here;
But a few years back in Newcastle HMRC did a fuel check on all taxi's for red, there had been checks before but this time there confiscated the guilt taxis drivers taxis for fuel Tax evasion, the drivers concerned where advise by a solicitor to accept HMRC bill for lost fuel revenue to get there taxis released, as to fight them would take years to get back there taxies.
with the HMRC you are guilty until you prove you are innocent.

As with most things those who are determined to avoid the rules will find a way of beating the system. If the idea of this petition were to be implemented it would achieve nothing more than another expensive layer of bureaucracy and cost for those legitimately going about their business.
I visited a scrapyard yesterday to weigh in all the crap from my shed. My vehicle is on CCTV, and so am I. The transaction was recorded on a computer, and a printed invoice with my name, address, and vehicle registration was issued. Totally traceable.
We already have more than enough legislation in this country to deal with almost any event. No more is needed.
Detection, prosecution and punishment is the answer, not bureaucracy.
Don't get me wrong. I get as mad as hell when I see chuches and war memorials being desecrated for the sake of a few shillings.
I agree what is need is more enforcement, and the cps to prosecute more cases, the police and councils know which scrap yards are involved in the black market trade.
