  1. I read through the thread about Jason Trip Boats Topic link when searching for info on NB Holland.

Does anyone know where she is now?

We're planning on heading down the the L&S next year and and Liz's brother used to skipper Holland back in the 70's when she was on the Lee as a trip boat.

    Hi Proper Job,

That would be Simon then. I'm his old boss in the Holland days. Saw him a few weeks ago. How is Liz?

Oh and BTW Holland is at Pinnocks site at Ponders End having the refit.

  2. Air cooled Listers are prone to this happening. I have personnaly experienced it (Jumper stuffed up air intake stopped it) and I know of 2 other boaters that have had it happen with Listers. Keep an eye on the sump oil level. If it starts to rise...........beware, this is when it will happen.

IIRC there was an article in WW some years ago, warning of the danger of this.

  3. I am on the Stort myself at the moment with my very first boat which I only bought a couple of days ago, so this blog will be really useful for me.

I'm currently at Hallingbury Marina but this is only temporary and I have to leave on Friday as they are full. I'm looking for somewhere safe to put my boat for the winter before I venture out CCing in the spring. I won't be living aboard during this winter but just fiddling about on the boat and venturing out for some short trips to familiarise myself and get some experience of single handed boating. I therefore don't need much in the way of facilities, just somewhere that I feel comfortable that the boat is safe. Being close to a station will be very useful, but everywhere is reasonable close to the railway on the Stort.

    Any recommendations?

    Phil

    How long is your boat?

  4. Indeed a shame. That lock is a deep lock when its empty if you know what i mean. Its name is ''Hertford deep lock''.

Thats proof that life is a never ending learning curve. I've run a canal business on the Lea for 40 years and I've never heard it called or seen it referred to as Hertford Deep Lock before!

  5. Word has it that CRT are going to carry out the recovery by using stop planks (which I wouldn't mind betting they don't have now!) and pumping out the lock. They can gain access to the lock with a vehicle from the end of Mead Lane and along the track on the side of Kings Mead.

  6. Word is that CRT have padlocked the gates and that the owners insurance co. are sorting it out with a private contractor. CRT say that the lock could be closed for up to a week.

Three years ago when a boat sank in Stanstead Abbotts Lock, BW had it back and floating within a few hours. Ahhhhh, the good old days!

  7. As the heading says. It sank yesterday afternoon and is totally submerged on the bottom of the lock. At this stage I don't know any further details, but will post update when I find out.

Oops, it sank. not unked!! Don't seem to be able to edit title. Help mods.

  8. Has anyone managed to book a passage past the Olympic site? I know of several people who are trying to, and cannot get any response from BW/CRT. Emails go unanswered and they do not return phone calls. One boater wants to go through this coming weekend and is tearing his hair out in frustration. Is this another BW/CRT cock up? Difficult to believe I know.

  9. A newish wide beam boat caught fire on the Lea at Stanstead Abbotts on Friday night and was totally destroyed. It has been for sale on ebay for at least a year for £85k.

The grape vine tells me that the insurance assessor has inspected it and discovered that there was a petrol generator stored inside the boat and has declared the insurance invalid.

    BE WARNED!

Hands up all those with a petrol start Kelvin............ Me sir, me sir.

Anyone know how a petrol can should be stored on a boat safely and not upsetting the insurance company

  10. If you end up at Crowthers, don't let them talk you into a "Kelvin Pattern" prop. I did, to start with, and it was a disaster with my K2. I kept glazing the bores until I changed it for a 24x24 "proper" (pardon the pun!)shaped one.

  11. Not sure, I had the feeling they were very heavy GRP but had a name which implied concrete?

I think the company was Morgan Giles, unless there was someone there before them who really did use ferrocement?

    Tim

Thats the firm. I racked my brain trying to remember the name

  12. I wasn't there, but the role of a chairperson is to make sure that all sides of a debate get a fair hearing. From the above reports that doesn't seem to have happened.

    Tone

I thought that she tried hard to ensure that all sides got a fair hearing. Unfortunatly, most of the time she was up against a shouting competition.

  13. Where on earth did the Upper Lea and Stort Boaters Assoc. come from? I know quite a few liveaboard boaters on the upper Lea and none of them have heard of it or been informed of its existance. How did they come into existence and when, and how did they go about notifying people that they were recruiting members? Are livaboards with permanent moorings able to join or is it just towpath dwellers?

BTW I thought Madge Bailey did a good job under very difficult and hostile conditions.
