  1. Oi! I wasn't being in the LEAST sarcastic!! I was reflecting on our inability to do what we set out to do. We got half way and then just retraced our steps instead of doing the whole ring. Mind you, it didn't help that I'd stepped in a hole in the grass and broken my ankle on day 5!! So we decided to avoid the lock-fest! We covered a lot of ground when we were in hire boats and wanted to get to places. It's just now that it seems far more difficult - everyone wants to visit and we are older and lazier!

another stupid question but are all the locks on the FCR narrow locks? or are there any double locks on the staffs ans worcester etc?

  2. There are a few things you'll have to do to complete in a week:

    1. Turn all phones off so friends can't call and say 'meet you tomorrow for lunch and can we join you for the afternoon'

    2. Ignore all lovely mooring places and keep to schedule

    3. Close your eyes as you go through Tixall Wide in case your tempted to stop for a day or two

    4. Forget mooring up early in the afternoon with cups of tea and books

    5. Ban bacon butties and cups of tea/coffee sat outside in the early morning sunshine watching the birds

    6. Certainly don't have a day off here and there because the fire is cosy and because ... well, just because you can

or you'll be like us - we didn't even come close in TWO weeks!!

    :D

Thanks for your sarcastic comments now i actually have a 2 week trip booked would also like to head up to chester after the FCR

To be honest i tend to be wide awake by 6am while on boats so iam normally up & off after a full english breakfast & shower by 730-8am and always stop to have a nosev

Around the villages.and tend to stop around 5ish.i do plan were am going to stay over etc thou.

  3. Called in at the Shady Oak at Beeston on Saturday. It is under new management and things have improved greatly.

The food is good home cooking at reasonable prices and the new landlord and landlady are trying their best to make a go of it. They also have some real ales too. Had a really tasty home made meat and tater pie with chips and peas - £5.95. Fish and chips £5.95. Good selection of desserts to.

They inherited a lot of the previous tenants debts and have a lot of work to do to make a go of it.

Saturday night they had put on a 70's disco - didn't stay for that but at least they are trying to attract business. There is also a psychic night on 9th May.

I know there has been some negative reviews on the forum in the past but give it a go.

Just for information, I am not in any way connected to the Shady Oak but have visited on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed it there. Having said that the new tenants are doing an excellent job.

I really enjoy visiting the shady oak. Often moor there when we go from bunbury and sometimes often drive out to it for sunday lunch

    Glad to see its improving

  4. we moored at swingbridge 10 just beyond MAGHULL along with 2 other boats last night without any problems, except for the wind and rain this morning which made it difficult to make our way for LIVERPOOL.

Now in SALTSFORD DOCK all cosied up after real soaking .

I saw a couple of boats coming down the link this morning in lashing down rain? I saw 2 boats struggling to get in the lock at princes dk?

  5. We arrived here on Tuesday, cannot go back up the Soar its flooding cannot go down the Grand Union because its short on water so we have been stuck here waiting, nice little Town though!we have investigated it from end to end and we are keeping our fingers crossed for tomorrow!

    fingers crossed for you too

  6. Where is the boat, marina or on line? Private or broker?

Most brokers will arrange a lift out / dry dock on yr behakf. There are several surveyors here on CWDF. Depends on which part of the country. If near Sawley I can recommend Steve Hands who did two boats for me. But others are available

if the boat is at a brokerage they normally have a list of brokers you can call up see who is free first pricing etc.

    i recomend Mike Chadwick www.mikechawicksurveys.co.uk

  7. I have a Lister engine room....so when you open the interleading door to the back cabin...and stand/steer from inside the back doors, you get a lovely through draught of warm air....and then after a year on the boat, I just figured what that black holder thing was...wife had bought an umbrella with a straight handle...in it went....dry as a bone...marvelous....cruised from Picadilly Village, down the Rochdale 9 , onto the Bridgewater, and down to Lymm. Cat almost escaped at Sale, but just checked, and he's currently stretched out in front of the coal stove. ;-) (hate canopies....went for a trip once on a canopied boat and the wind kept blowing it down :)

excellent i love cruisng in the rain but i much prefer the sun haha!

when i was out on Larch over the weekend i discovered how good it is to have a stove In the boatmans cabin lit as your crusing along lovely and warm around your legs!

Ive just been on Lymm tv www.lymm.com/webcams if you go on to cam 5 its the moorings from Bridgewater house. There is a boat moored yup a light blue crusier stern with White and Yellow bands. I see this boat moored up everytime i go through Lymm. I often drive up for Lunch and go the golden flecce. When we left Lymm on Sunday it was moored at just before the winding hole.

  8. It was that day boat speeding a long was the reason I was on the wrong side haha. Have passed aerial a few times moored up at Sale but looks great now you have had her painted etc... Well done.

You must of left Lymm pretty early then on Sun morning.

I was just getting ready to cast off at Lymm to head to the winding hole and swing Larch round when I saw a boat approaching. The man onboard said I wouldn't bother yet I'd have your lunch & try again didn't really understand wot he meant till I I saw boats followed by more boats behind all covered it bunting. I ask on couple wot is was and it turned out to be Lymms C Clubs first outing to Grappenhall!

Was a sight to see then all passing the they looked great all 70 odd moored at grappenhall as I passed later on!

  9. Saw you on Saturday, we passed you as we were heading to Stockton Heath on the delivery run.

If I had to be critical about Larch I'd suggest that above the top guard should be painted in bitumen/blacking and not red oxide. I'd also like to see the top bends being painted up in the traditional manner rather than again, red oxide.

Hi Liam yes i saw you but was a little embarrsed as i had came around that bend on the left hand side as had a near miss with a load of drunks on board the day boat from thorn marine shouting abuse!

I did walk along the moorings at liam to introducevmyself but you seemedpretty busy
