  1. Hello

I'm very new to all this so please bear with me as this is a bit of a long one....

I'm really interested in living on a boat and all that life seems to entail living afloat.

Do any of you know of any societies or marina based organisations that I could go along to to get to know people and sort of join in and get to know more about life on a boat. Ideally I think I'd like to get to know a few people and practicalities before making any long term decisions.

If there isn't anything along these lines, is it acceptable to pitch up at a lock / marina and just go along and talk to folks. Not sure if there is any etiquette to this.

I know I could take a holiday but this is only 2 weeks and I feel that getting to know life along the waterway would be a bit more realistic.

I'm based in Sheffield so have easy access to a number of areas.

Sorry if this is a bit "rambling" and thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully respond.

As long as you don't ask 'is it cold in winter', pitching up at a lockside and chatting is usually welcome.

As for getting to know boaters, joining the forum is a good start, you could go along to one of the banters if you want to meet people in the flesh (we are not ALL axe murderers) there are at least to banters planned for August as far as I am aware.

    BTW welcome to the forum!

  2. In the depths of the last 2 winters we've not bought more than 6 bags of Taybrite per month due to a reliable, free, wood supply. We've already got most of next winter's stacked, the rest is Ash the tree kind... Still standing but that won't hurt because it's Ash.

Put that in your sums and smoke it.

OTOH the ash can be a pain, but I'd argue that as simple as possible is less likely to break when you least want it to so i'll put up with the ash.

I am interested in this Refleks business but one of our motivations is dinosaur preservation so keeping the wood supply together is important.

oops... Luv Smelly (I like kittens too)

  3. Which way are you going?

I might be able to persuade Tim to let me kip on his boat in Loughborough / Barrow again, but if you're heading north and then west along the T&M then my own boat might come out to play

We are heading up from birmingham, I'm not sure of the route yet (no nicholsons atm) we'll let you know soon

  4. The email I sent last night is on my machine at home Sue but please trust that it was sent to chair.09ATnabo, NielATwaterways & chairmanATrboa. We'll see whether anyone jumps.

Sorry dear, I got a pop-up last night when shutting the computer down, the message was not sent. Try again!

  5. Very nice but no picture of legging through Standedge. :-(

    Nick

Did they manage to sort that out in the end?

There was talk of us legging through Standedge when it first opened and Sue and Queenie drew Lilith to unload at, well, what turned out to be Slaithwaite, however the elfin safety mob put paid to it and she ended up getting towed.

    edit... love Smelly

  6. (slightly)

That's something I was going to ask on the forum actually. Ours is a 1kW element too. How long does it take to heat yours up CW? I tried ours once for an hour and the first bit of water that came out was REALLY hot. I was really pleased, until I started to run a bath and it got colder and colder and then back to ice cold again within about 30 seconds! I've not tried it since, I was worried about how much it will cost us on the electric bill ! I tend to run the engine now for about an hour and a half to get a full hot tank. Do people think this is more cost effective than running a 1kW immersion?

Some older horizontal calorifiers have the immersion boss at the top Kay which only heat up the top, otherwise you've not left it long enough. I'm sure Chris w's posted the amount of time it should take a 1k immersion to heat a 60l calorifier.

Our engine at 85 deg celsius running temp heats a full 60l tank (well two actually) in less than an hour, however our engine runs quite hot. might it be worth lagging the feed pipes to the calorifier?

I dunno how much domestic electrickery costs, but an hour's diesel cost me about 80p. you'd need to compare that with 1Kwhr which i believe is the base unit for charging electric useage, at least it was last time someone billed me.
