  1. Snip I rather suspect that as an honorary bloke, she'd prefer a crate of something alcoholic.

    snip

As a female, (Non honorary bloke) I take some small offence at that comment. If you offered me a choice of flowers or alcohol I would choose the alcohol and I suspect most of my female friends would do so also... Are we all blokes???

  2. We're 50/50 on big flights although funnily if there're no locks about muggins gets the lion's share of the steering.

Full marks for El Gato; NoH gets the locks AND the complicated steery bits... that's luurrrve that is!

I'll freely admit, If there's locks coming up I jump off with the windlass before smelly can get a word in. True, he does do most of the steering on lock free stretches but to be fair, if we're in the car, I do the vast majority of the driving.

I suppose I prefer boat travel from the comfort of the bow with my feet up.

  3. Hmmmm...

Is it possible to sandwich the edges of the plastic doorframe with wood to reinforce it? And then run the bolt through the whole lot to minimise the risk of the plastic cracking around the hole when it's done up tight?

Any more mods than that and you might as well make a whole new door!

I will admit to having thought of drilling through the whole lot, but I fancy a slighty more, err, expensive, solution.

  4. Dave & I have just supped a few beers with Dr Bradley in the Navigation - I think that was the official winding up of the banter.

PS Smelly's tent is still in place in that picnic area and we haven't seen him, Bagpuss, Jess or Geordie since Saturday night - should we have a peek inside before we head off tomorrow?

    Just in case ...

The tent is Jordy's, he had to leave quickly on Sunday as his landlord called him about a shed fire.. He said he would pick it up Monday. If it's still there I'll pop down later and get it for him.

Top Night BTW! Special thanks to wriggly for the toast and tea on Saturday morning!

  5. This duvet of yours...

    Richard

Is currently being held to ransom by the cats.. Even I'm not allowed there

A Much prettier walk, (if longer and considerably steeper) would be to would be to walk north from the Hopwood House then first right up and over Hopwood Dingle. Right at the t junction onto Redhill Road then first left onto Bracken way. Left at the next t junction onto Londales Road then follow it all the way round until the left turn onto Primrose hill. The first bridge after the tunnel is at the bottom of primrose hill.

Edit to add.. Forgot to log Smelly out again. Bagpuss

Whoops, wrong direction.. It's right onto Londales road, not left.. Sorry!

  6. It is with a heavy heart I must formally announce the retirement of team Sudan.

Many posters will remember Alexandra and those with the courage to step into the old IRC will remember the coven that grew therein; the coven meets this weekend to celebrate Alex's fortyninetyfirst birthday in Loughborough and I am a hapless participant in the rites. I expect to be firmly chained to the Norty Step for the weekend...

Good luck and happy sailing, I hope to see the CWDF flag at numero uno this year.

ETA, if teams are once more girding themselves in the Prince of Wales I'll probably see you there; I might even bring the hangover faerie again.

Not only that but I'm hoping to get custody of the norty step for the next term... Get used to being chained!

  7. The story so far, as far as I know it anyway.

We plan to visit the pub very soon to warn them beer might be required.

We still have 4 bed spaces, so if you want a bed PM me.

Getting excited now, two weekends to look forward to, BCN then the banter, it will be a good few weeks. :P

    Sue

Sheesh! Go quiet for a bit and you get forgotten!

Smelly will be single handing this time to prevent me falling in. I'll have the far more difficult task of finding the place by road, I can bring some happy bacon and sausages (although I much prefer bazzas happy sausages)

  8. This is what a migraine looks like - only flashing

    Cath

I don't know whether any of the others are art, but this one certainly was. It was commissioned by the Ikon Gallery; a study in "Urban Camoflage" if I remember rightly, can't remember which artist's work it was inspired by though.

The skipper wasn't too chuffed but a job is a job!

  9. Over the last couple of days the SOC indicator on our PV panel has been a bit strange... It's indicating >75% first thing in the morn before dropping off quite quickly.

I wonder whether the solar flare could be playing the panel up.

I suppose I will find out in a day or two, but it's nice to speculate.

    Curses...

    Love

  10. I don't usually agree with you Gaggle but I do here. If a strange man without a BW uniform was stood outside my boat taking details, I would be worried. If he kept coming back I would be scared, it would appear to be the actions of a stalker.

By the way Dave, I'm not saying you are a stalker, just that your behaviour could be seen in that light.

    Edited for spelling

  11. Hoorah! They've shifted it.

We're off at 0900 tomorrow (Saturday), Barmby Barrage closed behind us to give us extra draught and power saw in hand, just in case. Wish us luck.

    Completely off topic...

I love the colour of your boat, I wanted Sudan in that colour but Smelly wouldn't allow it.

  12. You can't do your own slaughter these days, unless it's for personal consumption only. Can't feed it to friends, and I *think* family are barred also. Very tough for small-holdings and subsistence/near-subsistence farmers.

That surprises me, I could understand not being allowed to sell it but why could you not feed it to your friends?

  13. Dekazer, if I need to I can take items like jeans into work to wash, I don't really like taking small items in though, and not only because they might get lost :o

Looks like this twin tub is perfect for my needs, it looks small enough to store above the calorifiers so with the removal of the big one we'll have space for an extra cupboard in the galley, bonus!

  14. One thing to watch out for, working hours for nurses tend to be either split shifts or 12 hour shifts (in my experience anyway). This can cause some difficulties, for example; when you want a shower at 5.30 in the morning but can't run the engine for hot water; Or you come home at 10.30, the electricity is low and you are unable to generate any more until the next morning. Not trying to put you off, it can work, but you will need to be meticulous (spelling?) about planning how long your resources will last you.

Bagpuss (the real one,not Smelly pretending to be Bagpuss)

  15. My first flight of locks was the Wigan flight on a friends big, heavy, Barry Hawkins. We were sharing the locks with a little 20' GRP so I spent most of the flight standing on the roof with a rope trying to stop my friends boat from crushing the little'un. I didn't really learn much about locking there.

First lock on Sudan was Spon lane on the old Main line in Birmingham. Smelly was insistent on giving me an intensive training course in controlling the boat, I lost count of how many times we went up and down that short stretch of canal.

  16. One addition to Athy's advice...

4(B) Make sure you hold the vent button down on the toilet cassette before tipping it up to empty it. Certainly on ours (Thetford C200) there is a vent which if pushed after it's tilted leads to an explosion of sewerage which splashes everywhere. If the button's held down as you pour it'll run out more smoothly; I'd still not wear your best shirt though

  17. :D

Continuously cruise round the fringes of 1 city ? Now I know this is a wind up  Dont u mean continuously moor ? ;)

Stratford, Severn, Avon, W&B, Northern Stretches of GU, BCN, Staffs and Worcs... I'd call that a significant portion of the system! There's a decent number of folk who do and never get any bother.

I was thinking of trying to get a moor round the Alvechurch area I drive and an looking for jobs in south Birmingham and Worcester as i live about 5- 10 miles from Alverchurch as it is. So don't really want to live in the city I want some where quite and away from roads as I have three cats and am used to peace and quite where I live any way.

sociable_hermit where is your boat based?

Thanks for all you helpful friendly advice you guys are ace

If you want to have a proper chat we'll be in Alvechurch from 1st Oct, or possibly the weekend before 23rd Sept (looking at the calendar that's more likely). If you're free you could come & try some rough weather boating, cats willing I'll be leaving central Brum at around 5pm. We might even bring the hangover faerie if you're good... If not cruising with us ask for Dan & Sue from Birmingham at the Weighbridge, we won't be far away. PM if you're interested.

Also, it might be worth asking around to sublet a boat up there for the winter; very naughty but it does happen, just don't ask the marina ;)

Alvechurch is slim for moorings although there are, I believe, a couple free at the minute after all the rigmarole. A lot of people say "get a mooring first" and you could probably sublet it for a while to recoup some of the cash. Ain't cheep though!

Dan (who should've logged out of Sue's profile) (a.k.a Smelly)
