  1. Sorry if this subject has already been covered, but does anyone know what's happened to the canal side shop that used to be next to lock 15 on the Audlem flight? We sailed through there on our hire boat over the Easter break and the place looked deserted. Wasn't there also a collection made towards a new shed in order that the shop could continue to trade within the boundaries of Health & Safety? I believe that over a thousand pounds was raised too.

We used to enjoy his fresh fruit and other goods on sale there.

  2. well, no...he was sitting down...and hugging the 'wrong' side of the canal so that he could hug the bank, as that was the only side where his steering wheel was on the boat, pretending that he was on course...the only hurdles that loomed were bridges or oncoming boats! Thick hat over his head...couldn't hear a thing..including warnings of an oncoming vessel! Apparently he saw neither until the last moment...& probably after the oncoming sailers had XXXX themselves!! Ah well, last minute, all ok & no mishap

  3. Someone has built the huge shopping centre just further along , i have moored there overnight ,left the boat empty there during the day and do you know what happened , nothing at all , no trouble whatsoever.

Roll on the next episode of show anyway.

This must have been your boat on that occasion then! :P

Incidentally, during the course of my business life in the Security Shutter game, potential customers would contact me without prior canvassing for their trade. This, would you believe, was born from the fact that their premises had probably been under siege previously, by paragons of peace and virtue, that you imagine are in abundance in locations such as Barton Swing Bridge. Do you really think County Road in Liverpool resembles Beirut for aesthetic reasons?

    Mike

  4. One thing that surprised me was the Barton Swing Aqueduct being missed out with it being on the route from Worsley to the Anderton boat lift and also being another of the 7 waterway wonders

It didn't surprise me. The last time we passed there, I nearly got mugged by three bike riding hoodies! :help:

  5. Those photo's would be a great help

The eberspacher is a hydronic 10 and whilst it works does a good job - although the exhaust has decided to fall apart which is why its time to get this other system operational. The eberspacher typically always breaks down in the winter!

One of the issues with the current setup is the the length of run of pipework. Even the eberspacher has trouble heating the single bedroom as this is the last rad on the 'pipe run' and about 60' away from the burner. The pipe work runs up the left and partially down the right. Rads 4&5 are opposite rad 2, although on different sides of the boat.

Currently all the rads have TRV, hopefully the picture has more info

Ive had a look at the two 12v pump options bolin/jabsco - does anyone no if these limited by a length of pipe run? Ive not had a measure up yet but i would assume somewhere in the region of 40'-50' of pipe run for the 12v pump just to heat rads 2-5.

I'm quite surprised that you have a Hydronic 10 installed on a boat of that size. If you recall, I mentioned that we have a Mikuni MX40 heater on our boat, which is also 60' in length. Although its output is less than half of the Hydronic 10, it supplies enough energy to three double radiators and the calorifier, to heat the boat and the domestic hot water sufficiently.

It may well be that your heater is over-specified and it heats up too quickly, causing it to idle too often during its operational cycle. This could be why you're having annual problems with reliability. We once had neighbours who owned a 57' x 10' widebeam that had a Hydronic 10 installed. They too had similar problems, until they replaced it with a 5kw alternative. These heaters have to be worked hard, in order that they don't 'coke-up' inside the combustion chamber and around the flame detection device or glow plug.

With regard to the capacity of the pumps, I wouldn't think either of those would have trouble with your system. Remember that they're not actually having to pump a head of pressure, but simply recirculating an otherwise static volume of coolant around a level with a very small gradient. If you were to consider a gravity fed central heating system, where there's no pump installed, the water circulates efficiently simply by its difference in weight in relation to heat absorbed.

You also mention that the heater struggles to warm rad 5 in the single bedroom, have you tried balancing the system using the lock-shield valves on the rads. By metering the coolant through rads 1 to 4 and leaving rad 5 almost fully open, you may find that it heats up more efficiently. It's certainly worth a try!

  6. I understand exactly what you mean except the "pressure surge". Surely the level in the header tank simply rises and falls with temperature level, where does the "surge" come from? If the header is the correct size (a couple of pints?) once it has overflowed the first time it should never do so again unless the system gets even hotter.(or you add more water)

This bit is much the same as the thread a couple of months ago about keep topping up the engine coolant because it kept overflowing.

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

if you recall my comment, I stated 'if' you get a pressure surge, not when. This relates to if you allow the stove to overheat, the coolant will expand (creating a pressure surge) potentially beyond the level of an open header tank, causing it to overflow. Since fitting the sealed Eberspacher tank, I've not had this experience, even when I've neglected to close the bottom door of the Morso, causing the stove to overheat!

Edited to say that my missus has neglected to sign out, hence the reason why this post appears to be from another member

  7. On the staffs & worcs we got a peace of log caught on the prop.

Had to push it out then got it out of the canal with the boat hook and wondered what we should do with it.

Just then a boat came around the bend and went into the lock we where by.

The log ended up being taken by them for their multi fuel stove lol

Last year, when we were on the Staffs & Worcs, we passed a two seater settee followed closely by some interior household doors.

While frozen in on the Coventry canal this year, we used to frequent the canal side Anchor Pub in Glascote(only to play on their pool table). Next to the pub, was a road bridge where the locals would throw all manner of things that under normal circumstances would sink to the bottom of the cut. With the water being frozen, the evidence was laying on the surface for six weeks until the thaw arrived. Bloody disgrace!

After reading this thread and seeing some of the crap dragged from the canals I couldn't believe my eyes when I settled down to watch the movie The Full Monty and low and behold there was a Ford Cortina or maybe Granada floating in the canal.

    Oh my,

    Terence :(

Just clicked onto your web site. Think we'll be contacting you in the spring, nice work! :)

  8. i was horrified to read on one of the forums that a somewhat dubious character was boasting about training to be a Boat Safety Inspector. This person in question is well known to me and several other Boaters... a boat he was working on lately failed ALL aspects of Boat Safety due to highly dangerous electrical work, dangerous diesel installation etc etc which had been put in by this fella...there where a lot more 'iffy' things going on with him as well, but I realise this isn't the place to air them....what I'm more concerned about is..how on earth is someone like this able to train as an Inspector???? Is it all down to anyone can do it providing they have the fees?? I have always felt totally safe when using a Boat Inspector..believing my boat to be SAFE! Now I'm not so sure....What are the guidelines....are we presuming that anyone, regardless of their previous and apparently present activities can be given a certificate allowing them to put someones life at risk? You may think I'm being over-reacting...but I have seen this fella's work on said boat and quite frankly it was scarey. Whats does everyone else think?

    ...One very worried Boater...

I don't think you're over-reacting. Indeed, you may recall last year when a certain waterways author's boat suffered extensive fire damage, due to a boat moored close by going up in flames. The inference was, that the fire was caused by someone carrying out electrical work earlier in the day and a fault occurred igniting the boat.

There must be thousands of instances where unqualified people conduct repairs beyond their capabilities and suffer the consequences. In this particular case, other people's boats were effected by the allegedly bodged repair.

There is nothing to stop anyone effecting such a poor level of workmanship the day after a BSC is awarded. Similar to a car with a new MOT certificate. You could have Heath Robinson change your brake pads and shoes the following day and the car may no longer be roadworthy!

On many marinas, there's an insistence that any contractors visiting the site, must report to the office prior to effecting

a repair or servicing a boat. Public liability insurance is a pre-requisite, along with hopefully, evidence of qualification.

Without such regulation, any Tom, Dick or Harry could offer his, or, her services without any form of accountability for their actions!

I appreciate that running costs can be expensive and money can be in short supply, but surely, it's within the boater's interest to ensure that any 'trade person' entering their boat, must have the relevant qualification to conduct the work.

  9. Thank goodness all English people are fine upstanding citizens, eh?

Because you have encountered a dishonest Asian you tar them all with the same brush.

Presumably, if the "drug fuelled thugs" were English, you will have the same opinion of all your fellow countrymen, otherwise it is just nasty racism.

Inconsistency destroys your argument. Your prejudices have let you down.

Goodness me! Have you just got in touch with your feminine side again Carl. Is it not a woman's prerogative to always have the last word?

In the course of my other business, I have encountered many English and many Asian customers. Whilst not being completely biased towards my own countrymen, of whom I have also dealt with some unscrupulous scrotes. I can without doubt, recount a vast percentage of Asian clients who thought they could con me with their typical culture of underhand tactics.

Sad though it is, that during the recent monsoon floods in Pakistan, whereby thousands of innocent people were killed or displaced from their homes and livelihoods, there was a universal reluctance to donate financial aid to help the genuine

needs of the people. Why do you think that was? Simply because the country is rife with corruption and the overall concern was, that donated funds would not reach the deserving victims of the freak weather.

If you have never encountered this cultural trait in your own commercial enterprise, then you have either been extremely fortunate, or, you have only ever traded within your own culture. Which is it?

There appears to be a trend amongst a certain class of English people, whereby, if any one dares to mention an incident relating to a non Anglo Saxon, they are branded as racist. Indeed, if you were ever in a room mixed with both Indian and Pakistani people, you would then realise what racism is all about!

Now, I'm off to inject myself with a bottle of Theakston's Old Peculiar. Just to remind me of some of the comments posted on this forum.

  10. As to your racist comments they merely indicate that you have the same attitude towards different people, as you do different drugs but I have yet to come across an Asian smack dealer, responsible or otherwise. :banghead:

My word, where have you been hiding all of those years?

They would sell their granny for a dime.

My friendly Asian neighbour resorted to sourcing alcohol 'out of bond', in order to compete with me. Then, when that failed, he moved on to drug dealing, regardless of the age of his customers. Following that enterprise, he graduated to people trafficking, should I continue?

Prior to regarding me as his enemy (in my own country, not his) we used to socialise together. During that period, he dropped his guard and boasted about the many illegal moves that he and his family had made to defraud innocent people of their hard earned cash.

I helped him extend his shop, my wife sat with his, all night during her traumatic labour period and our reward?, betrayal and a vein attempt to displace me from my business.

Please don't ask me to trust these people.

Completely off topic I know. I did my best to re-align this thread to its origins, but sadly to no avail  .

    Mustaffa Rest.

  11. And where are your qualifications to confirm this? My daughter is an expert - are you? Carl is quite right. The only reason that alcohol may not cause quite as much crime is that it is not proscribed and is therefore relatively cheap. Committing a crime in order to raise money to buy hard drugs may be more prevalent than doing so to buy alcohol but I bet the number of crimes committed whilst under the influence of hard drugs are far fewer than those committed by drunks.

Alcohol is a mind altering addictive drug. That is a fact. If you sell alcohol, then you are drug dealing albeit legally.

So you are intelligent enough to realise that anyone who has studied a subject to a postgraduate level is a moron? I suppose that applies to doctors, lawyers, scientists, Stephen Hawkin and all academics.

    Reluctantly returns to the arena.

My qualifications to have an opinion on this subject are my life experience. No amount of academic qualifications can substitute for real life experience! I have been fortunate, or, unfortunate, depending on your point of view, to have seen the effects of both alcohol and drug addiction first hand.

As I stated previously, whilst running my drinks retail outlets, our shops were raided by drug fueled thugs who assaulted and degraded my staff to a level were they required counseling. They never required such remedial treatment after dealing with the occasional drunk.

Please get this subject in context and enjoy a little realism.

Alcohol, in the wrong hands, can be dangerous, but not as dangerous as someone who's pointing a loaded gun at your face and doesn't even know what planet he's on!

By the way, the Plant Manager was also touted as an expert. His expertise lasted no more than 12 months, before he was relegated to gardening leave and finally awarded a gold plated map of the locality, highlighting where the job centre could be found!

  12. To go back to the altered signs portion of the thread - our local Contabulary had 'Working together for a safer community' written across the bonnets of the cars. The locals soon clocked that ten seconds with a red marker pen changed the 'or' in working to 'an'.

Don't know any of the individuals on here who have been so honest about their failed relationships but having read all the thread really hope you all find happiness or stay happy depending on where you are at the moment. Mrs twbm and I have been together 30 years, which is 29.5 more than our friends gave us. Buggered if I know what we do to make it work but it does - that's not to say we haven't had occasions when we've seriously wondered if men and women are actually aliens from different planets brought together by accident.

Men from Mars women from Venus maybe?

Out of respect to my Irish mother and any other members of the fairer sex. I think the only true explanation to why there are so many difficulties in heterosexual relationships bonding, could be due to the following equation.

A woman's menstrual cycle lasts 28 and a half days = The lunar cycle lasts 28 and a half days

The term 'lunatic' is derived from the word Lunar :wacko:

Takes cover and waits for the exocet missiles :help:

Speed mating? Isn't that what some couples (usually the non-males) complain of?

Is that a synonym for premature evaluation? :P

  13. Like almost everyone, I chat to Maureen if she is about when we go through wardle lock. I was saddenned to hear (from John of Tam Lin) earlier in the year that she had been in hospital for a cancer op and it had become a much bigger op than was anticipated but she was recovering. She needed another op (for her legs?) and the doctors were waiting till she recovered from the cancer op. Her latest spell in hospital was perhaps the op she had been waiting for.

Re her earlier life. She spoke of being on working boats but she also spoke of working in a "big factory" where she was resposible for providing the food for the directors and their guests. She would mention the name of the factory to me but not coming from that area it didn't mean anything to me and has long since been forgotten.

I often wondered if it was Maureens influence which caused the top paddles to be "adjusted" so that they cannot be fully wound up. Not only would this help prevent boats surging up to the gates but it would give Maureen longer to chat to everyone :-)

I DO hope that maureen recovers and is again fit enough to come out to chat to us all.

  14. Did you all know you can use Google Earth without an Internet connection in real time providing you have cached it while online at some point?

I could write a tutorial if there was enough interest.

    Biggles

I would be interested, but how much memory would be required to cache it?

    Mike

  15. I've saved it to my server, hope you don't mind

    Gary

Thanks very much Gary! You've helped two old gits sort a problem out. Can you also suggest a cure for the increasing amount of senior moments that we appear to enjoy too?

    Mike
