Sunshine and drive plates

Well, wasn't the weekend a lovely one? Well, it would have been more lovely mind if it were not for a broken boat and equally defective people (I indicate myself and family in this one!).   We had been at our mooring spot for just under the two weeks and decided Friday evening as it was nice, after getting all the various sized people we own onto the boat and a few bags of shopping as well, we would take the boat for a little cruise near the water hole so we could get an early start to fill up

Towers and Tribulations

Well, it has been a while since I last frequented this lovely establishment, so I thought I had better come on and say hello.   Good news is, I will have completed a whole six weeks of not smoking tomorrow so feeling pretty good about that. The one amazing thing about that is that since quitting I haven't got my yucky hacking nasty cough anymore. I expected to have a bad cough with my lungs starting to clear themselves, but I have just stopped coughing all together. No more morning coughing fi

How it all began......

Well, I thought it was about time I started a blog although I've nothing particularly exciting to share at the moment, and no trips across the channel to report, but when I do get proper cruising next year, I can put it here, which is always useful!   So, I will start with a little ditty of how things came to be.   So introductions. I am Angela, and live on my narrowboat (NB Sploosh) with my husband Mick, and the two kids.   We took our first narrowboat trip in 2004 after looking for an al

Sofa Issues!

I was just reading honey ryders blog talking about what lies beneath ones sofa! I kind of have the same thing about not wanting stuff in the same place, but as said, it is rather difficult moving stuff around. Plus in our case (probably the same with loads of you), that it's a fine weight balance and if we moved the sofa from one side to the other, we would start listing quite badly I think.   We put down wooden flooring early this year. With 2 kids, carpets are totally impractical and we had

Long Time, no visit

Well, it seems an age since I logged on here. Well, it has been an age that's why. No excuse really other than I am more busy than I know how to cope with. I have snuck a working day from home today (or from boat), so here I sneaking on here to catch up. Blimey, it has been a while.   I have been putting in some work effort, lots of training up Europen lovelies, and then even more, it is a never ending round until Christmas, but it does keep me out of trouble most of the time. I have also been

Just when you think

you got the whole no smoking thing licked, something has to go wrong.   Well, let me just say folks, you would NOT have wanted to have been anywhere near me last Thursday. Maybe you wouldn't anyway, I don't know, but for sure last Thursday.   Man I was the evil witch of the world I tell you. Not just evil, but seriously down as well. Every conceiveable emotion was running through me.   They say smoking when you stop has the Icky 3's. That is day 3 will be naff, week 3 will be naff and mon

Wet and Windy

A usual bank holiday theme of course, but it did make for a miserable time for some. We had intended on painting the cabin side, but Saturday was too bloomin windy so it was abandoned for the Zoo instead.   Sunday and Monday were of course a complete wash out for that and I also didn't fancy trekking it for four hours getting wet so we risked running out of water until Tuesday. It paid off and we didn't run out but we did need to pump out too, so we set off 8 am Tuesday.   Well, when I say

A tough time to come...

We didn't do much boaty related things this weekend. Mainly shopping, a trip to the inlaws to deliver a birthday card, and some eating!   We did pick two of our favourite pictures of stonehenge out though. One of the two of us took by the other couple that were there when we had it all to ourselves at 6am in the morning, when his knibs proposed to me in the middle and one where the sun is just rising and hitting the side of the one of the stones.   We brought two wooden frames to go with the

Crash!!!!

So how we all? Well I hope.   So Thursday I went to have my stitches out. Hubs picked me up, kids in tow, and we get two minutes down the road. A Czech lorry driver decides he wants the lane we are in (and our right of way), so whilst our wee escort is very brave, it was never going to win a fight with a 17 ton HGV, so it gets buffed out the way.   One rather crushed bumper and dented wing later we come to a halt. We are now blocking all three lanes of the road leading down to a busy junctio

Let it snow!

Had a nice cruise at the weekend. The sun was in my eyes most of the time so it was one hand on tiller, one saluting the sun, but it was lovely, esp as it is so quiet. I had forgotten how wonderful it was almost to have the canal to yourself (well apart from those moored up of course).   We had snow on Sunday too! It was very odd because it just sheeted down all day and I attempted to make the first of three cushion covers for our new convertible bed. Well, it will hopefully be convertible, a

Wondering...

I've had quite a tiring week this week. Nothing much to report boat wise. Not moved all week (lazy so and so's we are!), but w**k has been hugely busy, and because I am female and stupid, I ask for more of it.   Point is, I am the only wage earner. This is by choice. hubby was on the verge of a nervous breakdown before we moved to the boat, and during the five years we were together before we got wed, we didn't see an awful lot of each other as he was always away at customer sites all over the

Drowned Rat

At least, that is what I feel like today. Get a lod of those storms! I am currently (as in right now) sitting in the bow of my boat typing this. I am 'working from home' but the reception where we are currently moored is lousy and you can only get a connection if you are outside. So outside I am. Its like listening to rain inside a tent, and there are a few drops of rain coming in, but its OK. I am not cold despite the wind and rain, as at least I am under cover!   Weekend was nice, pottered a

Babies galore

The area was awash with babies this weekend. We were treated to the two ducklings who have so far survived by themselves along with two swans and their brood of seven cygnets. All seemed very happy tucking under one of mum's wing with the exception of one brave little soul who was attacking the grass bank and having a jolly good time being independant. I shall be sorry to move on next week for I shall miss the adventures and what is going on. I hope to come back soon to check on them all!   Be

Any Old Tyres?

Right, first things first, how lovely was Saturday? We had a gorgeous cruise in the morning. We took our time over it as well. His knibs who had been annoyed at not being able to to this one turn finally cracked it this weekend. We have done it loads of times, but you get a slight breeze and you tend to go all over the place.   It's a winding hold just after a bridge, and it's a sharp left turn to get the boat into a position to back it up to get round. it's not the easiest of winding holes i

Pictures

Well, I rememberd the camera today so I've put links in to the three pics I took. One of our sofa/sofa bed, one of our new seating, and one of a view from the bow steps down the boat.   Please ignore the trademark ex black prince orange curtains, they will soon be history replaced with ones matching the large cream cushions in the pictures (but that look like curtains obviously!).   Boat1 Boat2 Boat3

Grrrrr - Terrors on the cut

Well, what another corker of a weekend eh? It was just gorgeous outside. The canal froze over big time. We have an external thermometor which read the temperature Saturday and Sunday morning at -7 and - 6.7! The poor wee ducks were having trouble getting any water and it was rather amusing watching the poor things trying to skate over to the bread offerings of passing visitors.   It seemed everyone was out. We had before 9am, 6 cyclists (on the road running parallel to the canal), 3 horses (a

Let's talk about falling

Well, we are not going until about 4 but I have already had my first accident.   We left our current mooring about 9 am today to get water and supplies for our trip, and as we moored up, and I went to tie up the front, I managed to lose my footing (bad footwear it is now binned). I fell all the way in. Man, was it cold, and dirty, and I fell badly.   I got out with the help of hubby who had to tug me and my wet stuff out of the cut. I managed to cut my back leg, and both of my legs, knees, t

Serviced at last!

What a gorgeous morning.   Firstly I have to say something which my hubby saw. Quite incredible, and funny.   Yesterday morning after he duly dropped me off at w**k, he headed back to the boat, and he said there was still a good amount of mist on the water. As he sat out front, he saw a boat coming towards him, green I think, covered in leaves, and separating the mist as they cut through as they come through the bridge. He said it was funny and amazing because as the boat passed he saw the n

Grumble time

Well I know there are RCR fans out there, and the man you all seem to get must be brilliant, but the one we got could have caused us to spend £400 just like that (and then some).   After daring not to take our oversized bathtub out this weekend, our man Colin finally came yesterday to take a butchers at the engine. Nothing wrong he said. Picked up some crap that's all. It's worked its way to the top, don't worry. He said even if it was the head gasket (which he says it's not), you would know b

The paint job begins

Seems once spring starts creeping in (somewhere anyway) that the itches begin and the hands get eager to do something other than stoke a stove up and polish the inside brass.   Now is that time. The boat has been through another winter and although not in bad shape at all, is starting to show those little signs of ware that you just want to contend with before they become huge rusting pieces of contemporary art work.   So Saturday, with the promise of good weather, we got a system going, whi

Sploosh by name, Sploosh by nature.....

I lived up to my boat's name this weekend by having a dip. Well, my leg did anyway. Serves me right really. We decided to go out early Saturday and look for some material to cover the seating we are making in the dinette come convertible double bed. We came out of the boat, and as I did up the cratch covers, I put my foot up onto the bow cil to lean over to pull the zip down. Done this many a time, but not on wet steel with boots that have less grip than teflon does.   Anyway, you know what ha

Busy as a bee

Blimey, what a day yesterday. Was rushed off my feet, had shed loads to do, and was helping out my American counter part so all in all a busy day.   I am also one of the company first aiders which came into play yesterday, when a girl was found unconscious. It was quite scary for all concerned. She has been brought round by the time I was called, but she was totally out of it.   We are not sure of her exact illness or other factors, but she needed medical attention that's for sure.   I'd

New Additions

Well first bit of news: Hand is doing well. I took the dressing off yesterday and it was fab. It was driving me nuts having this big plaster stuck to my hand. I've replaced it several times as over the day it gets gruby and dirty (you know, messing with coal, stoves, cooking, all that good stuff including removing muddy boots!).   Anyway, because the incision is now healing, the stitches feel even tighter than before. They are little blue (presumably nylon) type stitches which at the ends wher

The waiting game

Despite knowing I will be having surgery in a week or so's time for a good while, I haven't really prepared myself yet. I know it's a minor op of course, not anything big, but with it being a hand, it's qoing to have quite an effect on my every day living for a while.   Stupid things like lifting, carrying, tying ropes, carrying a toddler, washing me, & washing up(if I am allowed to get the stitches wet etc), and really silly things like brushing my hair which I just do without thinking, a

I'm being eaten alive!

Well, not quite, but it certainly feels like it! Man, I hate those little flies and midges that just hover around. What is the point of them? Can somebody tell me what their purpose is in life. When they evolved, what was the point! I can only see them hovering about in a random pattern, and that is all they do. Then if they get stuck in your hair, they bite you to death and have you running scratching for dear life. Not good!   Anyway, enough of those little creatures. What a fine bank holida
