Liverpool Canal Link Easter 09

Anyone planning anything for Easter 09 at Liverpool ?

Assuming that the Liverpool link is open at Easter 09. I want to plan a round trip from Barbridge.

i.e. Barbridge > Anderton Lift > Weaver > Ship Canal > Eastham > Albert Dock > Liverpool Link > Leeds Liverpool > Wigan > Leigh Branch > Bridgewater > Preston Brook > Trent & Mersey > Middlewich Branch.

We did a similar loop (in reverse) via. Langdon River entrance in '98, on the way to Salford Quays for the National.

So it would be good to do this again ..

I'll need some company on the Ship Canal and Mersey stretch... Anyone interested.

I'm sure Liverpool District IWA will have something organised for Easter 09 , but all seems quiet.

( Chester and District are very quite about the L'pool Link - am I moving in the wrong canal circles ?)

Any news on Easter 09 in Liverpool would be useful.

city council and bw wigan office are saying nothing in reply to emails asking for info.

lockkeepers jobs for the link have interviews going on , dont know if it is bw jobs or private firms tendered for the work to see boats through , the jobs are apparently coming from a manchester firm .

was told last year by bw lad the escort through may go to private firm.

One BW representative, says the Link will open at Easter with an event attended by "about 50 boats". Another official, from the same office , says the Link will not open "until July". I have no idea what will actually happen. Apparently , traffic on the new section can be only one way at a time , which seems odd unless there are a lot of wide boats expected.

The link was officially handed over to bw last friday and they are at the present time commissioning the passage.

bw wigan gave this info today on phone and also say a press release will be put out end of this week or early next week.

never said if it will be national press or local , if local i should catch it and will post.

They seem to like one way systems.

The Ribble Link is tun as one way only; which is silly as one one tide you will only get outgoing boats going DOWN the link before the tide, then up after the tide as they cant access it otherwise!! It is narrow, but there is no practical reason why both ways cannot be used on each tide; excpet manning costs of course.

The lift bridge at the bottom of the Stanley flight which carrys

Regent Road over the cut between Collingwood and Stanley docks

is still blocked off to road traffic whilst repairs/renovation takes place

I asked somebody "working " on it about a date. 'No finish date set yet'.

was the reply.

Canal boats can fit under this bridge without the need for it to open. Indeed, I don't think it has been capable of opening for a while.

Ah well if they manage to keep it closed for long enough peel and others can join in the chorus singing that the road is not really needed and to save the authorities money peel will take over it.

regent road "dock road" from the gladstone docks to just south of the alexandra docks went that way , the dock estate at that point now goes right up to rimrose road "atlantic gateway".

they put mountains of coal adjacent to the housing estate that was once there and as peoples health suffered , yes they said the people should be moved out the estate demolished and peel and the docks gained all that extra space.

rumours are that peel "mdhb formerly" own freehold rights to lots of the old terraced streets around the docklands in bootle , that is just hearsay though.

Quite, and of course the fixed arched bridge at the end of Stanley Dock is even lower.

ISTR that the bridge was only found to be knackered, when someone tried to see if it still swung???

Have you heard whether BW will be charging boaters for this method of enlivening the sterile docks?

hardly sterile of boating / liesure activity , the south docks have lots of canoeing and sailboat activity, the marina has plenty of boats in it and the yellow duck vehichle are in and out of the waters like blue arsed flies.

Have not heard they will be charging though , maybe for moorings on the pontoons and you cant moan about that especially if they get the lecky connected up .

i would like to know what is being put in place ,if anything regarding services ,pump out ,water or elsan disposal .

Dont know if the marina has them in there or if they would allow narrowboats to use what is there , some very classy looking yatchs ect in there.

Someone tried to make it swing? That'll be why it's broken, then - it's supposed to lift!

Waterloo Dock and Princes Dock weren't sterile of boating/leisure activity, then?

I didn't want to get too technical!

Last time I mentioned the word "basculating" somewhere, I was told that the word doesn't exist.

Only a part of West Waterloo Dock was filled in. The rest of Waterloo Docks, plus Princes Dock and Princes Half Tide Dock were in water but "sterile" until they started work for this link thing.

I thought it was people like you and me writing to Liverpool Council who saved the waterfront!

It's nice to know that the water works properly!

BW have to spend a period testing everything, as they were doing in the photo. All the construction has finished but there are bits of tidying up still to be done.

The channel and lock between Mann Island and Canning Dock are in the middle of an active construction site so there may be some issues there that are delaying the date for allowing boaters through.
