Liverpool Canal Link

As has been reported here by others, work is now well under way on the construction of Liverpool's Canal Link between Stanley Dock and Albert Dock. The link will extend the Leeds and Liverpool Canal through the former docks area and past the Pier Head to one of the city's most popular tourist venues.

Most of the area between Princes Dock and Canning Dock is now a construction site. In addition to the canal link, the new Museum of Liverpool and a Cruise Liner Facility and Ferry Terminal are also being built.

The excavation has unearthed some relics of Liverpool's past, including a Victorian sewer, a 250-year-old river wall, ornate stones from 1673 from Liverpool's old Town Hall, and remnants of Manchester Dock and Chester Basin.

Two new pages of photos have been added to Pennine Waterways web site showing work on the Liverpool Canal Link.

See www.penninewaterways.co.uk/ll/liverpool-link11.htm

Here is one for starters....

What a fantastic set of photos of the new canal link being built, only living about three miles away from the city centre i am definately gonig to take my camera with me today for some of my own snaps, (not sure how close they will let me get though??)

we all need to remember that this is a huge piece of history in the making, can you imagine trying to construct this canal link when the leeds and liverpool was origanally built, just imagine the tools they had compared with ours today........... :)

You will be able to see quite a lot through gaps in the fence, but you won't get as close as I did, as I had an official escort!

What impresses me is how much they were able to do hundreds of years ago without the tools and machinery of today - don't forget that the whole of the docks, the Pier Head and even the Three Graces were built on what had been a mud bank that was under water at high tide!

Thanks for that Martin

Do you know if they are planning any open days? I notice some historically interesting sites are starting to do this

For those who didn't see my previous post - there's a webcam giving 3 views (rotated each 30 mins?) of the construction here: http://www.aptb09.dsl.pipex.com/lcl.jpg

Didn't realise watching a hole getting bigger could be so interesting... :)

I'll be taking a drive over this weekend - memo to self: must remember camera this time!

the tunnel under St nicholas Place is finished, it doesn tlook very wide though, I wonder if they will have traffic lights...?

they are demolishing the buildings by canning dock at the moment, i got some photos for my site last weekend. I have been down there plenty of times and looked at the webcam, but int he fine British tradition you never actually see any work being done...

people should come to the city and have a proper look at this and all the other stuff in the city centre.

you con come on your boat almost into the citre centre or get here anyway you can during this birthday year , lots who have come have decided to stay and are at present helping to rebuild and reshape the city centre.

see the past the present and the future and see it all in the one place.

It is wide enough for two narrowboats to pass but not for a narrowboat and a widebeam.

No, it will not have traffic lights but, as there will be a lock between there and Princes Dock, which will probably be BW operated for booked passages, the problem shouldn't arise.

My partner is originally from Liverpool, so I think it a certainty that we will be going as soon as it is open.

the city is now open.

Its shut today, its raining so everyone decided to stay at home!

One thing about the link I thought was odd was the pipes going under the canal, I thought it would be a better idea to have them going over it like they have at the tunnel in St Nicholas Place. I guess the are confident the pipes will last as long as the canal!

the final stretch of canal leading to the docks and the link has been given another 1 million pounds today , this money is to upgrade the towpath and access between bedford road bootle and the eldonian village.

waterfront bosses want the stretch revitalised to help in bringing 4500 barges into the heart of liverpool ,£860,000of the cost will come from the mersey waterfront organisation and the council is expected to rubber stamp the remainder of the cost tomorrow.

the above will connect to the sefton council £1.1 million pound scheme for the canal as it passes through bootle.

a seperate plan to introduce canal rangers who will tackle security problems ,pick up litter and remove graffiti is also being worked on.

commodore jimmy woolfall of THE MERSEY MOTOR BOAT CLUB has welcomed this as fantastic news and reports that numbers of visiting boats to the club has quadrupled in recent months showing the demand is there for passage.

work on the scheme will take place january to march.

can onyone on these forums supply me with details of any reported incidents that have happened on the leeds and liverpool canal on the section between maghull and eldonian village in liverpool over the last 2 years.

another site is now reporting that is accepted omongst boaters that the stretch is a no go area.

this is completely at odds with my own experiences while boating or walking along this length and i find it hard to believe that what they have stated is the full truth or anywhere near the truth.

i have emailed bw to see if they can provide any information about any events that would make the area a no go area but to be honest i dont see it.

edit-for anyone who is worried about going that way be informed that bw provide an escort through from maghull to liverpool , the reason for the escort by bw staff is not because of any expected trouble but because of the number of bw operated bridges across major roads that have a tendency to stick.

What site is that, Gaggle?

My own experience, again by boat and on foot, is that it is generally harmless. It's a bit like all the crap that a few people talk about the Ashton Canal. The trouble is, when people bad-mouth a canal, the mud sticks and some people believe it to be true.

BW don't exactly escort you from Maghull, they just travel from bridge to bridge in a van.

You are right about the sticking - after we passed through the very busy Netherton Swing Bridge, they tried to close it and nothing happened. It remained open for a long time while the guys struggled to get it to move. I'm glad we didn't have to work that one ourselves!

nbw ,and whats more it was probably lifted from this site with nbw adding its own opinion as to the no go area status.

i have just emailed them a photo showing brian of the pink boat who writes for their site at eldonian village in the summer looking not at all worried , they could have asked him how many times he was attacked coming through.

liverpool echo reports today-

the actual canal cutting has been completed and workers are now laying concrete slabs to make it watertight , this should be finished in three four weeks.

towpaths with benches and landscaping are planned to finish in december, fully completed.the channel will remain dry until building sites adjacent to the link are deemed safe enough for accesss to allow boats to pass underneath.

is it the norm for bw to organise a cruise or other event when a restored or renewed peice of canal is ready.

no date for passage to start , they are building new museum ect around the cutting and they say these building sites must be safe enough for access to public.

all bodies are going at it in orderto get it on as the cruise ships QE2 AND OTHERS are mooring up about 100yrds away from the link and access to the city proper is dodgy over the sites.
