Home and Canal boat exchange

Just putting this out as a bit of a fishing venture.

My wife and I used to own a canal boat and have done a number of trips over a decade ago. We are wondering if anyone with a 60Ft + canal boat (in good nick) in the Shopshire region would be interested in a 2 week exchange sometime in the next two years for a waterfront home on Vancouver Island 40 km north of Victoria where we live. We have a desire to repeat the trip with our grandkids that we did with our youngest kids.

Thanks,

Chris R.

You need to sort the licence situation with CART and the insurance too.

Unofficial boat hiring is a no-no, there have been disasters.

But this would not be hiring.. If you hire something, you get temporary use of it for an agreed payment. No payment would be involved here. Each party would grant the other party the temporary use of something on the understanding that it would be returned. That's lending.

Is that official Mike? I did not know that the licence made any distinction between a hire and a borrow long term. Insurance certainly is an area to be sure of.

Chris, we lived in Shropshire (in a house, just before we spent 12 years living on boats) and did a house swap with a couple from Creston BC. Great experience, great trip.

Cherries and beer.

Just backing you up in a way, I love western Canada, somebody has the chance for a really memorable exchange.

I am not a lawyer. But, if I lend you my Beatles L.P. and you lend me your Rolling Stones L.P., and after listening to them we give them back to each other, that's not commercial activity. Apologies for the archaic example (and the possible slight upon your musical taste), but I'm sure you see what I mean.

If of course one of us scratches our borrowed L.P. there could be an exchange of words and we might replace the damaged LP. out of goodwill, but to me that's still not a commercial transaction.

Whether or not it's classed as hiring is probbly between you and your insurance company - but as hiring would suggest a business transaction which this wouldn't be then I very much doubt that it would be.

These kinds of holiday are very common though possibly not with narrowboats specifically.
