Just received this notice - its seems serious and may well leave the lock inoperable for a considerable time

Notice Alert

River Severn Navigation
Starts At: Lock 2 Gloucester Lock
Ends At: Lock 2 Gloucester Lock

Tuesday 15 January 2019 10:00 until further notice

Type: Navigation Closure
Reason: Structure failure

Original message:

Please be advised that Gloucester Lock is currently closed until further notice for customer safety. A severe leak under the lock has made control over the water levels in the lock impossible, putting an excessive load on the top gates and making passage unsafe.

We will keep you informed of any updates as they occur. Please take this closure into account when planning your journey.

For further information or advice, please contact the Gloucester Dock Office on 01452 318012 or at enquiries.southwalessevern@canalrivertrust.org.uk.

Not sure how that puts a load on the top gates unless they are forcing them open before it makes level

I think it means that they cannot leave the lock full as the leak is draining it.

I'd taken it to mean they can't get the lock full - which would mean forcing the gates open against a head of water.

I guess Gloucester Lock is not that busy in winter due to the vagaries of the Severn and the need to book locks further upstream, but come spring it will be in demand

extract from CRT Press Release

A lock gate connecting Gloucester Docks to the River Severn is closed after a “severe leak” was discovered.

No barges will be allowed into the lock while crews start to repair, and possibly replace the lock gates – an operation which could cost as much as £30,000.

It is not known how long the lock gates are out of bounds for but it is expected that work to repair the gates will take place on Monday, January 28.

further press release from CRT Gloucester

Update on 01/02/2019:

Update -

Despite our best efforts this week, we have been unable to dewater Gloucester Lock due to the high rate of inflow of water from both the top end (top gate/paddles) and the bottom end of the safety gate.

So next week we are going to improve the water tightness at both ends with the intent to facilitate dewatering the lock and effecting repairs to the cills. We expect to be able to start this by 11th February. Regrettably this may mean the stoppage extending beyond w/c 18th February.

We will keep you informed of any updates as they occur. Please take this closure into account when planning your journey.

For further information or advice, please contact the Gloucester Dock Office on 01452 318012 or at enquiries.southwalessevern@canalrivertrust.org.uk.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation in this matter.

CRT navigation notice today

Update on 18/02/2019:

Update -

The new high capacity pumps have now been installed at the lock and successfully tested.

The diving team have been able to start work on repairing the leaks in the cill preparatory to dewatering the lock, however the high tides expected on the River Severn this week will delay this work due to safety concerns and the risk to the work boats on site.

We will report any further progress as it occurs, but our timeline for completion is still uncertain.

For further information or advice, please contact the Gloucester Dock Office on 01452 318012 or at enquiries.southwalessevern@canalrivertrust.org.uk.

The end really may in sight-latest update

Notice updates:
17/04/2019 @ 09:59

Update 17/04/2019

Further to our update earlier this week, we can now confirm we expect Gloucester Lock to re-open on 28th April.

The extent of the leak was much greater than originally anticipated when first discovered in mid-January.  Due to the challenges we have faced in draining the lock, the requirement for a bespoke steel coffer dam on the river side of the lock, which is now in place, and the difficulties we have faced with the accumulated silt, work has taken much longer and is proving more costly than could have been foreseen.  The delays to the repairs have been compounded by the regular spring tides on the river which has meant work has had to be suspended on occasions for safety reasons.

We share the disappointment of the boating community that the Lock will not be open before Easter and our sincere apologies and thanks go to everyone for their patience.

There was a report on the local news tonight and they said they were hoping to be open within 10 days.  There has been a number of unforeseen challenges, seeing a guy wading thigh deep in silt highlighted one of the problems.

Your spell-checker has politely changed the last sentence to say "thigh deep in silt"

surely if there are so many spring tides at the moment, why hasn't anyone turned right at sharpness and come back upstream and over the weir? not exactly trapped if the tides are high enough to overtop the weirs.

Is the river particularly high at the moment, as they imply?

The amount it rained up here up to Saturday I suspect it will be soon.

I doubt they would find a Pilot to take them!
Plus there is all the fresh coming down from here

The stoppage email this morning said they were clearing silt from the “safety gates”, if don’t know if that means the outward facing flood gates or the stop planks.  But they say it should be complete today.
