Methinks the quotes are 'outrageous' because of the complexity involved - not the least that of the dreaded BREXIT possible issue....

If it's a large barge there's a problem of the sea crossing - ? special transport and what sort of 'ferry' . Easy to dismiss as outrageous if you have no concept of what may be involved (- no disprespec', but there can be all sorts details which make the operation more expensive)

Can uou give us some more details -

Beam / length / weight?

What size barge?? Anything over 7 feet wide and 50 feetish in length needs a special lorry and escort.

You are using 2 separate ferries if the lorry is going to drive across UK along with two drivers plus the escort.

You may be better waiting for Spring/Summer crossing the North Sea and taking it through the Caledonian Canal.

Post Brexit - Republic of Ireland is planning to start a ferry service direct from Europe to cut out UK travel.

Well to be fair outrageous is a subjective term and we don't really know what your requirements are.  - How many cranes do you need? Big? Small? Do you need an escort vehicle? That's a fair amount of miles too, with potential for being an oversized load. I am not sure if there would be any requirements, legal or otherwise to have more than one truck driver. But I'd imagine any of these things will rack up the cost quite quickly. :)

I'd recommend giving more info as OldGoat suggested and maybe give an idea as to what sort of quotes you've received thus far.

Please note - I only want replies that I want to hear, anything questioning my intentions, or requesting further information will be treated with contempt.

Please only answer the question and give me a list of freight companies - NOTHING ELSE.

Thank you.

After the 30th March she will need to contact immigration at the first landfall harbour (that includes the Caledonian Canal)

Contact HMRC to apply for permission to enter, declare any goods aboard and pay any Duty or VAT applicable for a pleasure vessel (assuming it is)

As she will be arriving from a Non-EU country she will have to go thru' the whole procedure again on arriving in Ireland.

Far better to come out of Holland, turn left, down the English Channel, turn right at Lands end and head 'Northish'

I doubt it, Nicola Sturgeon will have declared unilateral Independence by then, shut the Scottish Parliament until they give her the money to rebuild Hadrians Wall and put all English folk on a one way ticket to Carlisle.

I think the key question here is, is this barge seaworthy enough that it can safely be taken directly to Ireland by sea as Alan suggests, without entering UK waters?

If so, and of course you can always wait for a good weather forecast to reduce the risk of encountering a storm at some awkward location like the Scilly Isles, then that's got to work out a lot cheaper than road transport, and easier than doing whatever the post-Brexit paperwork might be to get it across England.

I'm guessing that suitably experienced crew can be found for such a trip if the owner doesn't have them, and probably for less than the road haulage costs. Don't look at me, I'm strictly inland crew!

If not, then as others have said it sounds like an expensive move. If the barge is small enough to fit through the K&A, you could avoid Land's End and do it with two sea crossings from the Netherlands to London and from Bristol to Ireland, but that might be the worst of both worlds? Alternatively, maybe there's a shipping company out there which could crane your barge onto the deck of some large vessel and get it to Ireland that way? Dunno.

There are - I contacted several for a quote on bringing the Cat from Croatia to UK. the lowest quote was £30,000. It was much cheaper to take a month and motor it back.

If it was me I would look at moving the boat a bit closer, maybe through the canals to Calais or Dunkirk, not too sure if the lock at Calais is out of order but Dunkirk should be OK. There is a biggish boat lift there and good access to the Ferry port. I think there is a biggish boat lift at Reading on the K&A, It depends on your boat, if it a great big thing then it could go by sea, if its a little Westlander then the sea is out but it might just go on a normal trailer. If its OK for sea hops then you could have more choice. Try the Dutch Barge Association for more info.

Hell, you should have said!

I would have done it for £29,999.99 :D

Actually, we will be reclaiming Carlisle [historic rights], Berwick [footballing rights] and all the poncy castles and estates gifted to the Landed Gentry by English Monarchies since 1703 [theft of property rights].   In order to prevent local Land Registry disputes  all lands used by the border reivers and all black cattle thereon will be registered as Scottish with Scottish Crofting rights.

PS, as one of The Entitled. I have gifted you one apostrophe in perpetuity.

Here's me thinking she redeemed herself with post 17, I will see how /  if she responds, and decide if my ❤️ was misjudged.

I have oft been misrepresented myself: as anarchic, archaic, as a snowflake, sweary, rude, very rude, subtle, too subtle to be offensive,  offensive,  too offensive to be subtle.

bear in mind that we may know of companies that could handle this with ease if your barge is a 20' long 7' wide tiddler but would find it impossible to shift a barge that is 100' long and 40' wide

Very perceptive, lots of insight, in fact, it sums it up: there are companies that do boat moves, they are on t'internet

It all depends on the size of th op’s barge. When we were in Ireland with our narrow boat there were a couple of small tjalks that had been sailed across from Calais to the Thames through the k and a and then across the sea to Wexford and into the canal system. The locks on the r.barrow will decide if this is viable.

whilst we were there an Irish haulier, actually the one we used, brought a Sheffield size barge over and backed it down a slip at Bannagher into the Shannon.

It just floated ofwhen the trailer got deep enough. This chap was absolutely fearless. He had my 50 narrow boat from Stockton to Sallins near Dublin overnight and in the water before we got off the fast ferry in Dublin the next day

He didn't want you to see him reversing down the slipway at 30mph and then slamming on the brakes as the rear wheels touched the water, and the boat 'slid in'.
