Canal Community Centre

Hey everyone,

I am an architecture student at the University of Nottingham in my third year. For my final thesis project I am focusing on the Narrow Boat community of the River Lea in Tottenham Hale.

For the project I am looking at whether this community have a space to meet and spend time all together, with the idea of designing a building that can accommodate repairs to canal boats and a community centre for Canal Boat residents to socialise in. The scheme would also incorporate a bridge across the canal for other members who use the canal (for walking along, leisure purposes etc).

I was hoping some people on this forum would be able to answer a few of the following questions to help with my research:

 - How would you describe the community of boaters on the canals?

- If you had access to a community centre at your mooring what kind of facilities would you like it to have? Currently was thinking along the lines of: social/lounge like space, café, small shop, laundrette facilities, post receiving office

Any other ideas / comments also appreciated!

Thank you and happy new year,

Lucy :)

Putting a bridge across the Lea would cost a lot more than Half a Crown.

Luckily its a theoretical student project! Unfortunately won't ever get built but does mean no budget!

What community? Unless they are official residential they are obliged to move every 14 days. So thats not a community.

there are plenty of historic legal precidents if you go beyond google

That is very true. I guess that is very isolating. :( If you know of any precedents that would be very helpful for me to research :) Thanks for your reply

There is already something similar planned at Stonebridge lock just north of Tottenham:

a bridge is a very expensive option any new bridge will have to be DDA compliant which means extensive ramps. The advantage at Stonebridge is that their is an existing bridge below the lock

Acs in aylesbury

battlebridge in london

both formed in 70s

acs should be particularly of use as they were relocated with a clean sheet to a new site

Its also not isolating in the 80s there were groups of well connected mobile boats in london. No phones no internet.

do not confuse geographical location with community. We had groups from london to tring summit and aylesbury who were fluid and connected

Thank you very helpful - have taken a look at both - and both super useful :)

Ahh wow that is a good point, I definitely need to consider that in my project then.

Hypothetically, if there was a place on the canal that ran events/socials on a monthly basis say would this be something that groups would come to meet at if there was space to temporarily moor?

Yes good point re bridge - I noticed when I last visited that there were hardly any footbridges across to the other side to the Wetlands and Resevoirs - had to go across the Ferry Lane bridge which was definitely more for cars than pedestrians!

At Lady Lane moorings planning has been applied to knock down the club house and bar :(

Why?  Is it to rebuild them,  or a car park? or a nice house for a senior club member?

There are many "communities" of boaters in the larger marinas throughout the country. There are social groups on social media, forums as here and Thunderboat.

Many groups of moorers are not officially supposed to be there, see the end of the S Oxford Canal for instance.

Then there are the continuous cruisers that aren't, called continuous moorers by some, in breach of the 14 day rule.

Roland has already mentioned us here at ACS.  I was part of the Society team that managed the design, by a local architect, and the construction of our new basin and clubhouse. Happy to talk through the details of what we have, and about some of the things we might do differently or not at all.

Drop me a PM if you would like.
