plenty power to fire her up

noticed just above idling a knocking or slapping coming from cyl no 2

gave it some revs could still hear it no excess smoke coming from the exhaust

checked the mountings engine firmly bolted down checked oil reading top mark on the dipstick

Use a listening stick to pin point the noise, a long old screwdriver.   Could possibly be the de compressor lever adjuster come loose inside the valve cover.

If you remove the bit of wire linking the two decompressors, you can then operate them separately. With the engine running, operate them one at a time and see what happens

If all is well, the engine revs will drop on each cylinder by roughly the same amount

If one cylinder isn't running, operating the decompressor on the other cylinder will stop the engine

CAVEAT!

Diagnosis by forum is very nearly impossible.
