He does appear in the film, disguised, in long distance shots eg when leaving the lay by, Harry H. bumps the boats before it quickly cuts to Ron steering them round towards Brentford

I watched this film last night. Was sus'prised to see the screen play by Galton and Simpson. I wonder where they got the idea from and did their research.

The welsh actor Hugh Griffiths made the film for me.

Yes, he and Ronnie Barker were stars. I can't help but think a number of the extras were also boat people or BW workers. Derek Nimmo was good fun too.

I have a particular affection for Eric Sykes as "the Mariner".  Anybody who was familiar with the typical turn out from the Dunstable and District Boat Club at the time, or the pennant flying boats they owned will understand exactly why.  Mr Sykes' part was not actually quite as overplayed as it might seem!

Eric - yes indeed he put in top notch performances in everything he did. One of my "wants" was to see him on the stage so I booked it up and on the night before, he fell ill and we saw his understudy instead.
