Leeds & Liverpool Canal questions

Wow!  What amazing information overnight, for me to pore over and consider.

I will have to find a decent map of the canal and look at all your suggestions.

We are slow travellers and would not want to spend long days boating, but a mix of sightseeing, walking etc as well, which is why we thought we'd take a fortnight.

Have a little experience (4 day hire and 7 day hire), have mastered 'easy' locks, can both handle the boat and can both get through a 'crooked' tunnel without touching the sides, so can't be too bad!!

Thank you all for taking the time to include your days, distances, hours and start/end points which is really useful.

Have no doubt I will be back with more questions.

I would suggest you don't hire a wide beam, looking at them the visibility from the steering position looked abysmal and there is not much clearance on the bridge holes with one.

Some of those swing bridges in the 17 mile pound above bingley are very heavy .... we got into a good system with another boat with each opening alternate bridges for both boats to pass through.

Two weeks?

Depends if you want a leisurely cruise or just do the whole canal. I have cruised the L&L too many time to remember how many, but usually it's on the way out or back to somewhere else so we do long days. We did Liverpool to Leeds in 7 days but that was at the end of our 3 week holiday and needed to get back to base.

There are around 30 swing bridges between Gargrave and Leeds and you do find the occasional heavy one. After heavy rain gravel and mud gets washed onto the bridge plate so sometimes just a sweep with your foot clears it. The locks are usually not an issue once you get the hang of the ground paddles - no problem when sharing.

Like all Pennine canals it's spectacular and there's many places to stop along the way. A one-way would be ideal if you can get it. A great alternative is Sowerby Bridge on the Calder / Rochdale to Barnoldswick either way round.

Best way to do it. It's worth waiting for another boat to come along.

One piece of advice about clough paddles ..... creep up on them when they're not looking and take them by surprise ... that way they seem to open!

The trick is not to tug and pull at them stood next to them like trying to lift weights.

But stand facing the lock crouch and lift with one arm and them walk back to the lock pushing the paddle way from you..

It doesn't always work but will most times.

Everyone forgets the Western End - Wigan through to Liverpool is remarkably rural and scenic and you can throw in the Rufford Branch and the Liverpool Link. Hire from somewhere like Middlewich or Anderton or Acton Bridge

That's a one week cruise from Riley Green.  Must say we prefer Liverpool to Leeds though.

Or with Shire Cruisers you can do on way between Barnoldswick and Sowerby Bridge - not all on the L&L, and if you took two weeks over it, you could explore a little west of Barnoldswick too.

Watch the weather with this one, it's our regular stamping ground, got pleasantly stuck at Lemonroyd last autumn for 2 nights. Discovered the joys of St Aidan's RSPB reserve adjacent. Also been caught by high levels near Brighouse.

Re: Harnser's blog - This was our trip from Liverpool and Leeds http://nbharnser.blogspot.com/2018/05/melling-saturday-may-5-2018.html

Opening sentence : 25th May 2018, Last night was the worst night we have had in the Docks for disturbance, loud music until gone 1-30 am and then police helicopter and sirens until 3-30 am

Is it normal to be able to hear the noise of the city whilst in the Salthouse Dock?
