Smethwick Engine restored

Excellent, and I hope it does succeed in encouraging future engineers as intended. Since that is a stated intention though, can we also stop calling washing machine mechanics "engineers" (not to mention blooming "nail technicians") so those choosing their future career or profession aren't confused?  There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a mechanic (or a technician for those who really are that), quite the reverse: it's a perfectly good title for an eminently skilled job, but using the wrong title for it blurs the distinction and undermines the whole engineering profession by confusing the roles.   The medical profession wouldn't stand for the "nit nurse" being a called a surgeon, and that doesn't make either role any less valuable.

Oops! Rant over. Watt was a clever bloke, wasn't he? Fantastic to see his engine running. Thanks for drawing attention to the video. :)

Is this the engine that used to be in the Birmingham Science Museum, alongside Farmers Locks?

I think that was the engine from Hawkesbury.

I am happy to accept that it is now at Dartmouth but was it not in the BSM before it (the BSM I mean) moved from Newhall St to its millennium point site?

No, it's never been in Birmingham. It was moved from Hawkesbury to Dartmouth in 1963.

Fair enough, thanks.
