Letter to an accountant

This all rings so true, especially the bits about single-handed boating.  When I was working I used to take our josher on my own from Cowroast to Birmingham each year.  My school always broke up earlier than my wife's so she'd come up from London by train and I'd be waiting for her in Birmingham ready for our summer cruise.

I remember doing Cape, Hatton and Lapworth all in one day.  Wouldn't want to attempt that now :(.

I also recognise what it feels like to be boatless.  For ten months recently I'd find myself wistfully walking along canal towpaths trying to recall what it felt like to be at the tiller once more.

When we moored at stowe hill i was working shifts and if i had a weekend off finished at 1400 on a friday. Id cycle home flash up and breast the boats to buckby, and then go up single handed. Was very easy singlehanding the pair through the locks but hard work, with the heavy gates. Used to tie at the top, Mrs S would arrive in the new inn  and park in the layby.  Next morning Id drive the car to wherever we needed it and then set off boating.

no doubt would be moaned at now..for being slow or antisocial or something.

If you had said Stockton too I would be impressed, my all time longest day(locks and hours, not mileage though), and I was completely done by the end of it.

But you knew it was coming back out....and most definitely worth the wait.
