The boat is coming up to 8 years old and have decided to give it a good overhaul and have it repainted. It was originally painted using Rylards paints and wondered where I can buy these with any discount ?

Recommendations appreciated

Thanks,

Nick

Thanks for the opinions guys - I am not a painter although do realise that some paints can react with what is underneath - The boat is now largely rubbed back to begin with the undercoats, but hesitant to not use what was used before, in case it all goes to pot with a reaction. They sell Craftmaster in the local shop, but not sure it will be compatible..  I will give Arcrite and International a call - thanks for the info...

I will stick my neck out on this.

As far as I know Rylards made straight forward oil based paints and normally once well aged and well prepped you can overcoat with any other oil based paint. The problems might come in it you use something like a fast drying anti-rust primer that uses a "fast" thinning agent like the old formula Hammerite. You may also get problems if you try to overcoat a single pack paint with two pack or one that uses a very different thinning agent.

I have happily over- coated a variety of different oil based paints with other makes. If t smells similar there is unlikely to be a problem. I have just used Johnston oil based gloss over a mixture or Masons, Rapid Paints and Narrowboat Colours  and four months on no problems at all. The Johmstons went on better that the others, it level out much better.

Interesting comments about specialist boat paints, my neighbour recently had exterior paintwork painted on her house, the quality of finish and depth of colour is amazing.  Doors are finished in grey (Called - Drainpipe) and it matches Gardner grey well, makers of paint - Farrow and Ball. We worth considering, but it's a bit pricey.

I painted our garage door last year. I was REALLY impressed with the shine and finish (minimal prep, just a wipe down with Sugar Soap). Several neighbours and friends have said “Wow! What a finish! What did you use?”  It was just a tin of Dulux outdoor gloss paint (oil based) which I picked up as an impulse purchase from Wickes. So I tend to side with Tony B when he says that any decent exterior oil based gloss is likely to give a good finish.

And its pretty safe to use an oil based paint over any other type without reaction, 'except bitumen', its the safe way to do it if you don't know what type of paint your painting over. Its the other way round where reactions are very possible, ie, 2 pack, cellulose, Acrilic ect onto oil based paint.

We have used Rylards blacking on Fulbourne for donkeys years.

Being an old and fairly pitted hull we start with the premium protection as being fairly thin it is easier to get into the pits etc. For the second coat we use Rytex which is thicker. For the final coat we use the Premium as it gives a shinier finish.

Last time we bought from:

As an aside. We black Nightwatch as the above mention by Tim. It's due again sadly.

Also, Farrow & Ball doesn't have a good reputation in our circles. Just saying.

Me too with the Premium and Rytex. Someone said they'd stopped selling it due to regulation changes or some such. Is there any truth in that?

Also, how come no-one has suggested Garage Floor Paint? Has the idea finally died a death? ;)

Rytex have stopped producing their Coflex VT - their version of Comastic - due to EU regulations banning coal tar products from Jan 2019.

Ah, it makes a bit more sense now. Thanks Matty.

To the OP craft master far superior to Rylard in my opinion based on using both. I can confirm they are compatible, I have  painted one over t’other both ways without problem.

Crsftmaster is more expensive but goes on better and gives a better finish in my experience but in fairness I’ve only used it on my boat so not based on years of use or anything !

In the end, I have gone with International Paints, partly through nervousness about the subject, and partly because the painter recommended it, so seemed like a safe way to proceed - it's "only" the

"above-waterline" that is being done, as this has suffered quite badly over the years, and the painter's team has rubbed down to expose the bare metal in most places...  after seeing the preparation time and work they have put in, I am glad I didn't consider it was something I might "have a go at" - so far I am impressed....

I have used rylards with no problem and painting over and touching up oxford blue 8 years old no trouble, just need to give a really good stir. As to supply calcutt marina, wharf house boats braunston, methley chandlers, and many others stock it midland swindlers do not.  You can even get it on eBay but I have yet to find anyone giving more than a 5% discount.
