It's a subculture.  Not about just getting a roof over your head.  Living under a tarpaulin is 'de rigueur'.

There is a difference between the , so called, 'continuous moorer', the person surviving on a low income, the 'liveaboard' with stuff on the roof, and the New Age Traveller/New Traveller/Traveller.
One is an artificially created benefits and drugs based victim subculture allied with the 'rave' subculture that shuns and despises members of the 'settled community' which it leeches off in the same way as the other 'travellers.  The NBTA has a Traveller agenda.   The intention is to claim the status of ethnic minority, like other travellers, and, therefore, have greater immunity from 'interference'.   Few people seem to understand this.

Just a little bit of exaggeration there I think

Actually I was a fair marksman in my youth.  .22 & .303. Paper targets only

Lee Enfield .303 was a bloody good rifle. Not used much when I Was in the navy we used slr but did have access to the old stuff on the odd occasion. My specialist weapon or so the navy told me was gpmg I could hit any barn door with it at twenty paces.

But surely the aborigines were indigenous, whereas "settlers" by definition settle there having arrived from somewhere else?

Thank you Athy. Though to be fair, the native population must also have arrived from elsewhere to start with (a popular theory suggesting that a land bridge joining Malaysia & Indonesia to Australia existed way back when, though I see no need for such - the ancients were capable sea voyagers].

I understand that sea voyagers(probably island hopping) is the preferred theory, and in significant numbers - suggesting a planned migration, not a couple of people in one boat.

I don't know if they used rotting hulks or went via London though - anyone know how long ago Whilton Marina was founded? :D

The complete text of the book is on the Basingstoke Canal Society's website.  It's a great read.

Basingstoke Canal Society Archive - Adelina

I also found this a good read.

one part mentions being towed to the entrance of the Basingstoke canal  by the motor boat Arcturus when she was on her way back to the river way at Guildford.

Getting back to the poor boat that was sunk, does anyone know of the boats name.

1694, long before the Grand Junction Onion was built to see if the rotting hulks they sold in a pond were watertight or not.

They are indeed, years ago my fathers secretary was married to David Scott Blackhall the truly inspirational radio broadcaster who presented the BBC's In touch programm. He lost his sight in his 40's and taught himself braille. I still remember him trying to teach me the basics but I was too young to have the patience.

I thought it was a gravel pit, and they tried to drain it by digging a branch to the grand union. the resulting water surge dahn sarth sent the hulks towatds lunun. Seeing the success they have continued, causing the ‘saturday surge’

last week we met a distressed boatowner at wigrams crying which ways birmingham. Seeing the wilton marina sticker in the window i pointed him gently but firmly down the southern oxford...

Who would have owned Acturus at that time?

And still is.

It still holds the world record for bolt-action rifles for the highest number of shots, on a 24" target, at 300 yards in 1 minute. 38 rounds !!!

Achieved in 1914 by Sergeant Instructor Snoxall

I have a 'few' of them. My target at 82 yards (75 metres) with original 'iron sights' lying prone.

2 warming rounds at 10 O'clock then 5 rounds sub 1 MoA.

I also have an L42A1 with complete CES (7.62 NATO converted from a No4T) that was in the Falkland War.

No.

I do have a 'few' (all 'live') in the collection including a WW2 sniper version, The Enfield No4T.

There were only 1000 of the L42A1 manufactured.

I also have an Enfield No7 which is one of only 2000 manufactured in .22rf for the RAF.

The most 'historical' would be the WW1 Enfield No1 MK3* version that has seen active service for over 70 years.

Maybe you see the relevance to the 'Forum Name' ?

Celtic I would not think was the original name.

CELTIC. formally BLACK BRAMBLE IV, formally Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd. No. 63.

This boat has been on the Kennet and Avon Canal for the past 20 years or so, usually to be seen in the Bathampton to Bradford on Avon area :captain:

edit - remove boat name BLACKTHORN ROSE and replace it with BLACK BRAMBLE IV - silly mistake as I have these two boats listed consecutively.

I’m sure I also remember Bryan and Arcturus operating from Cassiobury Park in Watford in the early 1970s.

Same here... around the Croxley area. Never knew it worked the Wey. The Wey prob has more interest per mile?

The very fact you ask the question displays you have not experienced anything like it, I'm pleased (for you ) to say.

This man appears to be in no state to be living on his own, unobserved by the system claiming to help him.

As has been said already, he is in no state to care for himself, sadly he want to be left alone, which is impossible.

I wish a situation like this could be solved or stopped from being repeated by asking such a simple question as  "does only having one eye stop a person being employed?" or making a glib comment like "CaRT need to get these type of boaters off the system ASAP"  on a public forum.

I pay my bills and stick to the rules I expect others to do the same, C&RT have allowed an unlawful situation to occur and are now facing the backlash, but trying to shame unemployed/one eyed/ unwell people is worse.

Compassion!  Sadly too rare on this forum.
