A smaller can, or bottle will be cheaper! ?

Where are you looking? Motor factors and truck specialists likely to be cheapest Canalside boat places expensive. In the past I've gone shares on a 20litre drum with a neighbouring boater from a truck parts place. Around £2 a litre from memory. Different oil spec from yours.

My Vetus engine uses either 10w30 cd or 10w40 cd. Does anyone know of any supplies for less than the 30 quid or so that I've found? Seems a tad expensive.

If that is £30 per litre its a rip-off, if its £30 for a 25 litre drum - grab it quickly.

It doesn't 'go-off' so for our Volvo's which take 3.5 litres each, I buy a 25 litre can, at 200 hours oil changes it is soon used.

On the other boat each engine takes 27 litres so I buy a 45 gallon (210 litres) drum, and keep 2x 25 litre & 2x 5 litre cans on board

Price (delivered) on ebay works out at about £40-£45 for a 20/25 litre drum

As far as I can remember multigrade oil appeared about 1959. One of the frst was BP Visco static, a red colour with a scented smell, it didn't have any sae rating on the can, so don't know what it was, it seemed pretty thin.  Prior to that the basic grades of straight oil were, by Castrol anyhow, were. Castrolite 20 sae for the winter. XL, 30 sae, summer and XXL, 40 sae,for clapped out oil burners.  Castrol R, 50 sae for certain high performance engines, mainly motorbikes. I always used the straight oils in VW aircooled engines which tended to foam multigrade oil in the summer.

That appears to be rather well suited to our application, particularly for modern engines. Good price too - easily beats eurocarparts which is where I normally source mine.

That's not the cheapest - just the 1st one I came to.

I normally pay around £40 - £45 for a 25 litre can (rather than a 20 litre)
