Greasing nipples

Straight answer is its a usual push on nipple which a common or garden grease gun will fit. As to grease, any automotive grease, using waterproof grease is usually a waste of time, regular greasing is required to drive any water out.

A rubber flap over the bearing to keep the rain out is a good idea

It used to be the perceived  wisdom to use waterproof water resistant grease ( makes good sense if your stern gland is of the grease lubricated type - one grease for both jobs).

I once used a 'moly' grease on mine and I was not overly impressed.

Morriss' K99 comes in small tins at a reasonable price.

On my tiller there is a grease nipple. Is there a particular type/size of grease gun I need for this, or are they a standard size?

Thanks.

As nobody has actually answered your question, grease nipples are all the same standard size so any gun will do.

I dun well to avoid any inuendo there dint I..! .

Generally all the same size, BUT, there are 'big ones' and 'small ones' and metric sized and imperial sized.

Generally for the run-of-the-mill applications you are correct for 99.9% (estimated) of the time

Then there are :

Concave head Nipples

Slide-On Nipples

Button Head Nipples

Mushroom Head Nipples

Slide on Nipples

K-Type Nipples

Bayonet Nipples

"The Nipple Shop" has an interesting 76 page catalogue of nipples and accessories.

I was about to buy a grease gun from Screwfix but in the Q&A it says they are for 14mm nipples. I assume this is the standard size. However, my nipple (below) is clearly not 14mm. Is this even a grease nipple? Maybe it's an oil nipple. Or something.

Maybe my OP should have just read "what do I do with this thing?" The reason for all this is that when I use high revs to turn, water comes up through the tiller-tube and I noticed yesterday a metallic whine as I turned the tiller (sometimes).

That is a standard push on nipple, just go to Halfords and buy a grease gun...

Too late, I went and bought the "14mm" one at ScrewUfix. It works great.
