After all the boat handling and fun and games was over Paul took Whitby around the buoy one last time but this time he got the counter perfectly positioned to allow Viv to place some lillies in the traffic cone in the centre.

Fun?  Oh yes!

Silly? Oh definately yes?

In keeping with the spirit of the event? Very much yes!

Perhaps, if you wanted to place some flowers in memory of those who were much missed at Alvecote this year this is the perfect way to do it?

Thank you Paul and Viv for that gesture - the photo is Viv's by the way - you can see the prop wash from Whitby as they head back to the mooring.

Well strictly it was not "after all the boat handling and fun and games was over", because we were one of the first boats out on parade on Monday, but only one of two, I think, that bothered to do the proper circuit up to the other winding hole.

Most just turned left out of the marina, straight for the Barlows' winding hole, then back in again, but some of us were doing the proper lap(!)  I felt a bit sorry for Cath, as she actually executed a textbook "round in one" outside the Barlow, missing the confounded island comfortably, despite it being the first time she has ever done it.

We were a bit gutted Paul and Viv had already decorated the "island" by the time we got there, as we actually had an identical plan, but were pipped to the post!  At least we still have all our flowers on our cabin roof, though!

I am a lot gutted I missed that

Sorry!

What I saw of proceedings really depended entirely upon what customers I had at the time as it always does.

We had a cracking weekend, but one of the few things that did disappoint me was the degree to which many of the people I would have as guaranteed to take their boat out on parade actually shunned the opportunity to do so.

Obviously Sunday's parade got cancelled because of the weather, that clearly can't be altered, but Saturday's was very poorly taken up, and Monday's almost not at all.

To me it has always been a highlight, meeting many of the other boats and crews over the whole allotted length, not just in the tiny part past the marina - an hour or two of minor mayhem, but not total chaos!

I do think the organisers need to look into why it was so much less part of the show this year, as I think the show was slightly the poorer for it, (though, to be clear,  overall the whole event was cracking!).

I have my own thoughts, and these echo views expressed by others who, unlike us, actually decided not to take their boats out.  It's probably not fair to air them here, but I'd be happy to discuss with the organisers.

I went out to parade on Monday and did the full circuit.  I left it until 2.30 to avoid the crush, only to find I was on my own!  By the time I got to Barlows everyone had gone home!

Thanks Mike, but I'm in good hands at Rose Narrowboats who are being brilliant in sorting me out.

Yes it's a VOAC motor.

The damage happened as I was passing through the swing bridge outside Rose Narrowboats.  I think we were incredibly unlucky since the shape of the obstruction could have been specially crafted to fit snugly between the prop and the ring.

I would have said that these drives are pretty robust and it's the first time in nearly twenty years that anything has obstructed the prop.

Just to complete this story and record our thanks to Antony and Charlie at Rose Narrowboats.

I knew we had a serious problem when hydraulic oil began to leak out into the cut.

It was Sunday afternoon and no one was around.  As I was scratching my head, rather alarmed by a potential pollution problem, who should come down the towpath but Charlie who works at Rose Narrowboats.  He phoned his boss, Antony and within half an hour Hampton was up on their slip.  An awkward shaped piece wood had well and truly jammed the propeller and the oil was leaking out of the seal.

Antony and Charlie removed the motor and the next day consulted their hydraulic guru, Wayne, who took it into a specialist in Nuneaton for repairs. Hampton then went back into the water to await the return of the motor.

The rebuilt motor has now been fixed and because we wanted to be under way in time for the Village at War at Stoke Bruerne, Antony kindly fitted us in between other jobs, slipped us out again and put the motor back in the rudder.

Brilliant service.

Thanks for all the good wishes from friends.

Glad you have it sorted. What size VOAC is it?(CC/rev) Just interested because I have a couple on my boat and am pondering increasing the size so may end up with some spare motors.

It's this one: F12-060-MF-IV-K (i.e 59.8 cc/rev).  New motors are eye-wateringly expensive!

Interesting

Mine are both 47cc (pump amd motor). There is a new F12 080 MF IV on ebay asking £850. Does it have to be a special one as it is immersed or is there an extra shaft and seals. I also throught that if you get a 'jam up' the relief valve goes open and everything is safe - perhaps not. At least you are up and running again!

The motor I've got is designed to be used in boats.

I too thought there was a relief valve.  I'm going to contact ARS diesels and ask about this. I've found them very helpful in the past.

So whilst you are there twiddling your thumbs you could have a walk up to Brinklow Boat Services and take a photo of my boat as I have not seen it since it came off the dock - in June (but it will not be pretty as there is still loads of work to be done) :captain:

We are supposed to be taking Flamingo up the arm in a few days, (provided it is not actally pi$$ing down, like it is now!).  Will try to take some pictures if we do.

Here you go, Pete

Pictures taken yesterday, mostly by son David.

It looks a pretty good boat, with hull in very good order to my untrained eye.

I think you have probably made a shrewd purchase.

Lovely bit of history there.  I wonder which lock she was cross winded in and when?

Otley.jpg

Looks as though it took a decent left hook from it's butty empty as motor would have been bow high & butty running level
