That's more than we did  

We only got as far as Brinklow when the oil seal on the hydraulic motor sprang a leak after getting a lump of wood wedged in  the prop.  The motor is now with specialists in Nuneaton.

I'm very envious of all the jollifications which you're all enjoying.  Ah well, there's always next year.

Nuneaton eh?  Never the  best bit of canal with an "historic" - we collected the "duvet from hell" in Nuneaton a few years back, and bounce through many of the bridges each time we pass through.

 

You don't seem to have much luck with the hydraulic drives - are they easily damaged ?

Yes it's a VOAC motor.

The damage happened as I was passing through the swing bridge outside Rose Narrowboats.  I think we were incredibly unlucky since the shape of the obstruction could have been specially crafted to fit snugly between the prop and the ring.

I would have said that these drives are pretty robust and it's the first time in nearly twenty years that anything has obstructed the prop.

We're hoping to be underway in time for the Village at War at Stoke Bruerne.

So whilst you are there twiddling your thumbs you could have a walk up to Brinklow Boat Services and take a photo of my boat as I have not seen it since it came off the dock - in June (but it will not be pretty as there is still loads of work to be done)

We are supposed to be taking Flamingo up the arm in a few days, (provided it is not actally pi$$ing down, like it is now!).  Will try to take some pictures if we do.

Well it is a very damp day here at Alvecote, with not a lot going on other than Sunday roasts in the Barlow.

 

For anybody who may still have been interesting in coming the historic boat parade has been cancelled.

I called in for a few minutes to see the boats but the rain was heavy. I like to see which wooden boats are being worked on at AP boatbuilding. I noticed Walton was out of the water which seems a little odd as it was only rebuilt a couple of years ago. I am assuming the other boat over there is Gifford. Am i correct.

What a great event marred only by the weather - shame we had to leave early this morning (and that Lewis came 2nd) but excellent as always - well done to Malcolm and all involved - also met some members in person which was an added bonus - now moored on the aqueduct at Rugeley - Penkridge tomorrow and home mooring at Hatherton Wed midday’ish - then home to Herefordshire for  a couple of days and then back on board till the end of our season.

Speak for yourself Mr Fincher but Auntie Wainwright had a very good days trading (considering) with the added bonus of having time to have a proper chat to folks who visited her emporium of fine merchandise.

 

We had a truly magnificent weekend (as always) and would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who made that happen:

Firstly and foremostly to the entire team at The Barlows who make us so welcome evey year and work so hard to make sure everyone is fed and watered - and still they keep smiling...

secondly to everyone who donated stuff and everyone who bought stuff and helped us trade - with a house move this year I have very deliberately allowed my usual stock to dwindle and was genuinely concerned I would have anything to sell but we put up the gazebo on Saturday morning and that is the signal to everyone to dig in the back of the cupboards and under the lockers to pull out the stuff they have no longer got any use for. A wheelbarrow full of stuff arrived 3 times! Boxes galore and sometimes those who just brought a small quantity of stuff in their hands brought me things that were such high quality they were on the stand for moments before being bought. What an amazing bunch!

 

Between you all, whether donating items or buying items, you helped us take an incredible figure of £550 through the weekend.

While we were all doing this there was a team back at Clayworth on The Chesterfield Canal fitting some rather nice new iroko to the gunwales of Python:

 

 

Your generosity has ensured I had the money in the kitty to pay for all the materials in their entirity with a healthy balance to keep the old lass going as we embark upon an especially busy 3 months of solid work maintaining the canal.

 

Python will be at Alvecote in 2019
