Lost water tank fill plug / screw - easily replaceable?

I've lost the hexagonal keyed metal water tank plug for our boat. (At the Bath Widcombe Lock Flight water point in the unlikely chance anyone has it!). Are these easily replaceable? How would I know widths, depths and thread pitch of the plug without trying to measure it crudely? 

 

It's a 1987 Colecraft. Any pointers well appreciated.

I think any decent chandlers will stock them. Its just the size that may alter but otherwise they seem the same.

They are (were at least) a BSP size so you should be able to get a suitable temporary replacement stopper from a plumbers merchant or even a DIY shed. The size is I think 1 inch BSP .Ask for a flanged plug in brass.

 Repacing the proper stopper will probably involve buying a new filler unit.

Midland Chandler's website shows water fillers with a slot in the top and pump out caps with a hex socket. The hex socket ones are available as a cap only for £4.99 in brass or £5.30 in chrome. For the slotted version you might have to buy the whole fitting. 

Best to call in with the boat at the next boatyard so you can confirm it fits.

To reduce dirt and water leaking into the tank you could screw a length of threaded pipe into the hole or even a nipple - just an inch or two - then use a black iron screw cap.  Though it’s hard to see in this picture if this would then be a trip hazard or obstruction.

We'd just launched and someone took our place and our rescue magnet doesnt seem that bothered by brass

Could my aluminium magnet work just as well?  I don't have a brass magnet.
