Barrus Shire alternator belts

Featured Posts

Hello all

I'm looking for a supplier of alternator belts for a Shire 45 engine - any ideas of online suppliers? I've got the Barrus part numbers but these aren't much help - I guess these correspond to generic alternator belt sizes but I don't know which ones.

Cheers

Matt

Not a shire engine in my case, but some years ago I took the original belt into a truck suppliers, and they matched a "Gates" belt for me. These are top quality and well cheaper than OEM ones. Once you have the numbers you can get them even cheaper on ebay.

I use the following on my 05 year Shire 45.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gates-Fan-Belt-950mm-11-9mm-section-6318MC-fan-alternator-v-belt-AV-11/160758489356?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

for the starter alternator (960mm x 11.9mm) and

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gates-Fan-Belt-950mm-12-5mm-section-6468MC-fan-alternator-v-belt-AV-13/130662068982?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

for the leisure alternator (950mm x 12.5mm).

To get the leisure alternator belt on I find the easiest way is to take the pulley off the front of the engine, fit the belt on both alternator and engine pulleys then refit the engine pulley.

Just got 2 from local motor factors. Both Continental 11.9 x 950 id 27639 and 6 pk 1005 4433794

I had trouble with the pk belt, had to strip the bracket down on the starter alternator so brought one 5mm bigger

Great, thanks all. I have the broken leisure alternator belt fitted by previous owner - but suspect it was the wrong size (squealing until it failed) so want to double check.

If yours is the early 110a alternator, made I believe in Argentina and no longer available, there was a problem with them and some of them use to eat belts on a regular basis. I've replaced my alternator with a generic 90A alternator and had no problems since.

Re the belts both the Gates and Continental mentioned previously are good replacements however I would, preferably, purchase them from a reliable source rather than ebay. I purchased 5 supposedly Gates belts from eBay and the first one latest 10 minutes, fortunately it just got me through crick tunnel.

So both Continental and Gates are fine from a reliable supplier, fairly common size so never really a problem sourcing them.

This is the alternator I replaced it with

Good company and very helpful. they also have a direct replacement after market starter motor much cheaper than buying a Barrus branded one.

The alternator will require modification to the mounting bracket so this needs to be born in mind if you chose to replace.

Width and length is all you need. As suggested size printed somewhere on the belt. Toothed? Squealing belt suggest alternator needed tightening. We have a Barras 22 series (50 hp), (don't ask why, it wasn't me, but brilliant on rivers) and pre Two belt design. Used to munch belts like no ones business. I cleaned the pulleys with wet and dry, bought new belt and tickity boo, they last years longer. Always carry two spares. Bought on line.

Fair point about ebay, I only use suppliers on there who I know and trust these days (Filtermania being one such company.) I once bought some Wahl labelled dog clippers from an ebay site but they weren't good, leaving me to suspect that they were counterfeit. Got some Wahl ones from Argos which were a little more expensive and still going strong.

I have always used cogged belts from Bearing Boys -

so good for me that I haven't replaced any in the last few years!
