River Great Ouse or Cam maintainance facilities

Featured Posts

Hello Everyone!

I have a 9.60 m steel cruiser that needs painting, only above water structures. I enquired in quite a few marinas but I can't find one that would lift the boat (10t) and store it 3-4 weeks while I do the job (as often they do it themselves and understandably want to make money). Can anyone please suggest any facilities either on River Great Ouse or River Cam?

Also, is it possible to moor up on visitors mooring for 48 hours and do little work on the boat such as replacing toilet unit and putting a shower unit in?

Thanks in advance Guys ! Enjoy the sunshine !

Or Hartford marina (near Huntingdon)

Yes I've tried those two places. And they can't help me sadly :(

Has it got to come out of the water?

Saw what looked like an empty 'boathouse' on the river - didn't see any activity of work going on so it maybe worth asking if you could rent the 'boathouse' for a few weeks?

It's on The Little Ouse / Brandon Creek  - http://www.littleousemoorings.co.uk/NarrowboatPainting.html

No it doesn't have to come out of water. It needs touch up here and there but it wouod involve scrapping old paint off. I was actually thinking of installing a tent over the boat and do it on the river as it would only take me few days and I would make no mess but I'm not sure if that's allowed at all.

You could try-

Streatham Dry dock (Lazy Otter) -they have a pullout and shed for hire which could be ideal

Wyton (next to Hartford Marina-used to be Daylock) Marina

Westview Marina,Earith

These spring to mind as are very much 'working' boatyards so more likely to accomodate you.

Too big and heavy for Lazy Otter and I'm waiting for estimate from Daylock and Westview but I'm scared that it will exceed my budget as someone said it might be 7-9 thousand. And I can really do it myself as I worked in construction and my father restored boats so he could help. Like I said it doesn't need a lot of work but will need to scrap some parts to bare metal for sure and I just don't know if I can do it in the water, under the bridge like Pearley said.

Yes there is a floating garage at Little Ouse Moorings available for hire. I believe Danny also has equipment for use with it, sanders, grinders plus air extractor. Plenty long enough too.

I've not tried that place ! I have all the tools needed but the more the merrier :) I will enquire for sure ! Thank you!

There is Foxes on the Middle Level where you can have it lifted out and placed in the yard for your own DIY work. http://www.foxboats.co.uk

From my past experience I would recommend Foxes. They are equipped for steel boats and have always priced reasonably. We moor on the Great Ouse and one of my biggest issues is the lack of support for steel boats - it is around but scarce and usually pricey.

We used to always use foxes trolley for diy blacking until they stopped it a couple of years back (or perhaps it was just us)

They were pretty clear to us! :)

Ah, I see :-). It seems to get worse on the Ouse/Middle Level so perhaps our plan to move back to the canals is a good one. We will probably spend a bit of time on the Nene, which we know well from our days mooring at Oundle. None of which helps the OP of course.
