Is it normal to breast up without permission ?

We are currently moored in Little Venice and last night(1 am) we felt someone on our boat. Upon our investigating  this happening we have gained a neighbour. Now we have nothing against breasting-up having done it on numerous occasions but have always asked or been asked for permission. Is this normal behaviour in Little Venice?

Breasting is normal at Little Venice. It's courteous to ask for permission if the boat is occupied, but if there is nobody on board then this is not possible. 1 am is a perhaps a bit extreme, but would you rather the other boater had hammered on your doors or windows to wake you to ask permission first?

Welcome to London!

Breasting up is the norm here and whilst good manners to ask as most boats are unoccupied a goodly percentage of the time it is quite normal to breast up without asking

It may be normal to breast up - but at 1 a.m. ?????

Discourteous at least.

However, that's Lunnon innit...

Yep, exactly. 1am finish should have gone out with the days of fly boats and the like.

Like it or not core boating is leisure based and a 1 am finish don't sound too leisurely.

Yes, normal in London honeypots due to congestion and on rivers with limited or no casual mooring for safety reasons. Difficult to hang around trying to get permission on a river with any flow

You probably wouldn't like a proper boat then. Happens all the time on the coast.

When the inside boat of 5 or 6 rafted wants to catch the 3 am tide, oh what joy! :)

Yes, and whilst your motoring off, just glancing back to see the 3 or 4 boats that couldn't be asked to get up, left just floating about the harbour on a single shore line, if their lucky!

It all adds to the conversations as you round the bill and first light!

Magic!
