Aylesbury Arm

Hope to go down the Aylesbury arm tomorrow. We haven’t been there since the redevelopment of the canal basin. Is there pump out facilities there? If not, anyone know where the nearest is. We are in Berkhamsted heading north, and know there is one at Cow Roast, but being a Sunday the marina office will not be open to buy a token from them. Not sure if there is a  CRT pump out at Marsworth (we have CRT cards). Any advice welcome. Thanks.

There is pump-out at the Circus Fields Basin run by the Canal Society, but not in the Town Basin at the CRT services.  You could ring the Canal Society in advance as you'd have to get in to the pump-out which is inside the basin by their slipway to check you can get access: 07784 540750.  May be best to use Marsworth before you set off down the Arm - maybe others on the main GU can confirm if it is up and running.

We had a look at the basin 3 weeks ago, as we were passing in our car.it looked a good spot for a few days. Some of the visitor moorings did need a little TLC. If you look carefully at the photo, there is a mooring ring bottom left.

Thanks for that. Tried the number, but unsurprisingly for a Saturday evening, there was no reply.

Confirmation that there is a CRT pump out at Marsworth is great. Had a look in the map and services seem to be just north of the Aylesbury Arm junction on the west side of the canal. That would work for us heading north and pump out outlet on port side.

Cruise up to pump out station, pump out using one of our CRT cards, reverse back the short distance to Aylesbury Arm junction and then down to Aylesbury. What could go wrong?

When I used it last year someone had managed to jam a card in the reader......however the panels are surprisingly easy to open and fix....some of the residents in the new houses didn't look too happy at us pumping out but maybe they should have thought about that before buying the houses. It's not one of CRT's best planned sanitary stations!

The pump out at Circus Field basin is only available to ACS Moorers. There is a CART pump out at Marsworth.  It usually works. There is no pump out in Aylesbury Town basin.

My thanks for all the replies on this thread. In the end we went into Cow Roast Marina. As expected, the office was closed, so no tokens for the self pump out. However a friendly moorer sold us a token for cost price (£15), so all well on the pump out front. We are currently moored on the Aylesbury Arm and will head down into the basin tomorrow morning. We were last there 12 years ago. The ACS were then in the terminus basin. They were superb; welcoming, friendly and even provided souvenirs of little models of Aylesbury Ducks, which we still have.

It is a little disconcerting to find that now the ACS will not provide pump out facilities (obviously for a fee) to visiting boaters. There is obviously a reason for this, but does not chime with the open arms policy we encounter d 12 years ago.

The basin has been busy over the weekend and the short-term moorings on the pontoons may be full, but there is plenty of mooring space along the towpath opposite the permanent moorings. The signage is confusing - some signs suggest that the whole towpath is (the world's longest) service mooring because there are water points all the way along, while others say that it is visitor mooring - as long as some water points are left clear everyone stays happy.  The 'far' end of the pontoon area is quite shallow because all the silt washed down the canal seems to end up there - the mooring outside the college is pretty gloopy, so take care there.

It's a bit less overgrown now than in the picture above because of the dry weather!
