Is this stuff blue green algae or something else. I thought we'd sailed into a fluorescein spill. Had to clean a bright green scumline from the toilet flush.

Don't know if that specifically is the Blue-Green Algae that has been in the news recently.

2 dogs, in the last couple of weeks, are known to have died from drinking it, and warnings are going out to Humans not to touch it, or anything that has been in the water.

Is blue-green algae a health risk to humans?

Yes, blue-green algae can cause skin rashes, sickness, stomach pains, fever and headaches in humans. There have been some reports of more serious illnesses including liver and brain damage. Children are at greater risk than adults. Don’t drink from or enter this water.

If you think you have spotted blue-green algae in water and cannot see any signage, report it to the Environment Agency who can investigate.

Certainly looks like it. Where are you? I will go the other way! Not nice stuff. Don't let dogs swim in it.

Reckon it is then. Rather disconcerting to see it in such quantity. Kids swimming in it, water skiers etc. Canal Roeselare - Leie, BE.

Lots of it near the summit of the L&L last summer (near Foulridge), and owners were letting their dogs swim in it. I mentioned it to one owner, and got a reply that the dog's been swimming in it for years. Didn't have an answer to that. Was paranoid in case ours fell in. Why take chances?
