Trivia question

After a number of years of owning our J2, I recently discover a well hidden ”ammunition” box.

In it were a couple of injectors with their holders, unfortunately in poor condition.

Also a spare cover plate for the upper part of the reverse gear case, but without the normal control wheel bracket, and no sign of this item having been previously attached.

Does this indicate that originally the engine was used in a lighthouse as a generator?

Incidentally, there is no Lloyds number stampped on the crankcase.

The injectors should be recoverable by a specialist.  They may need new nozzles but these are available.  They are  CAV BDN40 S2.

 

The wheel-bracketless gearbox covers are quite common.  They were normally fitted if the gear control was led to a steering position and a Bergius-Kelvin remote gear control installed.  The lighthouse engines were all Model K AFAIK and in any event were not supplied with a gearbox- the compressor drive was a flexible coupling fitted direct to the rear of the crankshaft where the ahead cone is on a gearbox engine ( apart from the K6R which is a another very different set-up).

 

Again IIRC you only got a Lloyds number if you ordered, and paid for, one.

It would be great to have some spares, so I’ll try a couple of companies that you have mentioned before.

I emailed Stationary Engine Parts Ltd.
They have queried the nozzle code for the J series - they think they may be BDN4S2.
If so they have them for £28.50 each plus delivery and VAT?
Any thoughts please Nigel?

 It decodes as B- British;   DN- Pintle Nozzle;   40- the included angle of the spray/ taper on the pintle tip;  S  17mm nozzle head ;  2 is the fiment specific.  Bosch would originally have called it a DN40S2

 

A BDN 4xx  woulld be a nearly straight outflow.

They don't seem to have any in stock but I had  heard Peter had stopped doing injection stuff.

Thanks very much Nigel - I really appreciate the detailed information and advice ?

I’m leaning towards the eBay seller as that one is advertised as a “kit”, so hopefully includes springs and washers etc?

I’ve emailed to request further info.

I’m guessing the other cheaper options that are not described as “kit” are just the nozzle.

(I might be assuming too much?).

Good luck with the 'kit'.  You will probably get  a copper washer and a nozzle in each kit.  The spring is usually part of the nozzle holder, which in this case was made by Bergius.  However, I would be very surprised if the nozzle spring was not  a standard CAV/Bosch spring, even though my annotated copy parts list has a Bergius drawing number for the spring (8120).    A decent fuel injection specialist with an interest in old gear will probably be able to sort a CAV spring to do the job- the injection pressure at 90 bar is not high for diesels.

The stem and seat on which the valve sits are annoted "Not Made Now", so I would think a bit of lathework might be needed if they are badly rusty.

The setting washers can simply be stamped out of brass shim stock as needed.  The originals were either 'thin' or 'thick'  so a micrometer might be needed if they are in a bad way.
