Sad to hear that Laurence died early this month, I believe that the funeral is next Monday.

Another great character gone - there aren't many left...

Sadly I never met him, though we did e-correspond. As well as his interest in old boats and trains, it's perhaps less well-known that he was a great fan of reggae music and worked for Dennis Harris' D.I.P. record label in London in the 1970s. He told me some good stories of those times and I had hoped that one day I would meet him and hear more.

R.I.P. Mr. Hogg.

I'm somewhat staggered to read he was younger than I am.

There have been so many canal related deaths recently, often in those of no great age - it certainly makes you think about life's priorities.

RIP Laurence

I have known Laurence for more years than I care to remember, and I was very aware of his illness. I last spoke with him four weeks ago and I was only thinking yesterday that this was an unusually long time - now I know why.

Laurence had a considerable archive that spanned a number of subjects, and I hope that this will find a suitable home where it can continue to live on in his memory.

Although Laurence was very opinionated and was quite stubborn he was an asset to the waterways and a tangible link to some of the last boatyards and people involved with full time commercial aspects of 'historic' boats and boating. The waterways have lost yet another knowledgeable historian, and I have lost another friend.

I'm always interested in video of the canals, history, building, living, boat building etc. Any chance of linking a couple ?

As others have said, no age, he died on my 70th birthday

Laurence was one of those rare individuals that cared about transport, and his interests spanned more than canals. Yet it is through canals and especially canal history this forum has had the honour to record his many observations.

His challenges to get canal structures better recognised were just one of the many canal activities he was involved with. Certainly boating was a passion that took him to many parts of the country and sometimes on extreme cruises.

It is difficult to find a single legacy which he has left, as it is not one but several where his influence and attention has contributed across the board.

Certainly he will be missed!

Im stunned, I was only thinking a few days ago he'd been quiet and not replied to some messages which was most unlike him. A very strong character he never failed to respond to any query or error he spotted, he was someone whose love and intense knowledge of the canals and the BCN in particular will be sorely missed. Absolutely shocked.
