Google maps fun.

Playing around on Google Maps, as you do, and I found this. One of the  Netherton Tunnel air vents  has a second life as a mini-roundabout. Cool!

The one in the roundabout doesn’t have a protective cage. I’m surprised the local yoof haven’t taken to chucking their Coke bottles and McDonalds meal remnants down it whilst driving round it.

If you look closely it looks like it has a flatter metal cover just, recessed into the top.

No,  I don't think that is an airshaft for Dudley Tunnel - it is surely the single airshaft for Gosty Hill Tunnel.

 

When you consier the massive rebuilding that has gone on in the tunnel over the years due to subsidence, I don't think OI'd want to own any of the houses built above it!

I wondered about subsidence too but then the whole of our village and particularly our estate is built on an old abandoned iron stone mine. We are about half a mile from the pit head.

I think Gosty Hill and Gorsty Hill are both legitimate spellings.  In fact pictures are available that also show that at one stage the permanent signs on the tunnel said Costy Hill, though I'm not sure if that was a possible error?
