Whining Leece Neville alternator.

Probably a bearing. Remove the belt and spin it by hand, it should spin quietly and smoothly. If you think it might be the belt whining flick some water on it whilst the engines running, it should quieten for a short time if it is it.

I have a 180A Leece Neville alternator. The whining noise it makes, overrides the sound of my 4LW. Is this a common problem?

Are you sure it is the alternator?

I mean, is there any possibility you have someone from the NBTA aboard? :giggles:

Does the Whine Noise reduce when batteries reach Higher Voltage (14 Volt plus) and less Amps.?

I'll check next time.

I had one that wrecked its front bearing, Prestolite were very good and changed it.

180A? its on a polytvee  belt? Too tight?

Polyvee. If it twists by 90 degrees is that about right,

tensionwise?

Yes. But only on the long stretch.  Is this more of a hum than whine? Remember alternators are AC generators at heart and AC hums at high amps.
