Alternatives to an Epping

I'm planning to build a back cabin in our new boat but space will be a bit tight so I'm wondering about something trad looking but a bit smaller than an Epping. A former boat of ours had a Premier - are they smaller and does anyone build them? 

Any other suggestions?

I noticed that the Braunston branch of Midland Chandlers had one of the Tomlow stoves made by Brinklow Boat Services on offer in store at a much reduced price, (which surprised me).

 

I greatly prefer these to Eppings being largely welded steel rather than cast iron.

 

However I'm guessing it is at least no smaller than an Epping, and maybe even marginally larger, so probably doesn't meet your requirements.

 

It  might be worth checking though, in case they are smaller than I am assuming.

When I googled for suppliers of the Tomlow a few months ago I drew a blank. I did wonder if, after the fanfare of the new back cabin range going into production, they had only made a single batch, now all sold.

Well about a year ago Brinklow had a number of part made ones at their yard, and I think a good supply of the cast bits that are used, (such as the doors).

 

It looked a good product.

 

Can you currently buy a new Epping?

OK - here are the dimensions of my Premier in good old fashioned inches I'm afraid!

 

Measured across top plate - 20" x 13" (No side extender plates fitted)

Height bottom of base plate to top of top plate - 13" 

I have the legs on mine although they are for "show" only - I use a welded steel hidden "chassis" behind them to support it.

The legs add a further 8 3/4" if you use them.

 

However where will you find a Premier nowadays? I thought the foundry/assembly place on the IoM (linked to Midland Chandlers) had long ago stopped producing them.

edit to add - Of course you could go for one of those Bubble Back Cabin stoves which are also welded rather than cast but maybe they're a bit big and also have a rather big price! (I haven't got one and have no connection to Harworth Heating!)

Regarding the Tomlow range, yes, we are still producing them, but we decided to change foundries earlier in the year, and whilst I had expected to have a batch of castings by now (in fact, I had expected to have finished the ranges by now), I am still waiting. There aren’t as many foundries as there used to be, and the good ones seem to be very busy. I would have to admit that I haven’t pressed them as hard as I might have done because of all the other things going on, but rest assured that we fully intend to continue to produce them in both two and three door versions, supply Midland Chandlers, and retail them ourselves.

 

In comparison with the Epping, the grate size and firebox capacity is the same, the body of the range is very similar, but the top has an overhang on the front and sides which means that they need a space a couple of inches wider than an Epping, so they are probably not suitable for the O P’s needs

Can you currently buy a new Epping?

You can buy new Eppings but it might be easier to try jumping through several hoops of fire.

I may have one for sale very soon if successful in negotiating said hoops, to add to my collection of reconditioned ones also up for sale.

No thanks, I prefer to think of them being suitably recycled into something that somebody will appreciate - and help to make a few bob for the restorer

At least have a look at the website of Osborne Restorations (sorry don't know how to post a link). This chap restores,rebuilds and remanufactures old portable ranges such as the Belle, the Larbert, and the Nipper, all of which come in sizes small enough for a motor boat cabin, and are vastly better than an Epping. I have to say, your nose (and even your ears) may begin to bleed when you learn the prices, but an Epping isn't cheap any more!

It would be better all round if they made everything from steel except the doors and top plate then it would bring the cost down as well as making them airtight and easily weld repairable.
