Guess the beastie...

I was messing about with my cheapo endoscope yesterday. Dropped it down into the Forth & Clyde canal and see this thing flop across the bottom of the canal.

Any ideas what the hell this is?

I thought a snail at first. The F&C has hundreds of snails. But, nah, it doesn't seem to move like a snail. I have videos of F&C snails, and they just move like land snails.

Bonus beastie: why are there underwater centipedes in there? You can see one scurry past at about the 3/4 mark. When did they become a thing?

I am NEVER getting into that canal...

Wot on earth are you doing looking at the bottom of the canal? Endoscopes are designed to be shoved up somewhere! Have you no bow thruster to investigate?

......movement seems to be akin to a bi-shell mollusc, using a single 'foot' to move. Boy that water is clean!

I did think it was a caddis fly larva at first.  Not so sure but can't think what else it is.

The thing that scurried past about 3/4 of the way through is a freshwater shrimp, Gammarus sp. probably pulex.

Caddisfly larvae? They cover themselves in river gunk and lumber about looking for food.

I think you guys might be right. I sure as hell can't think of anything better.

Rejoice! I have a part 1 to that previous video. I managed to repair the video file. This video is taken BEFORE the first clip I posted: https://photos.app.goo.gl/spWk7EUOv14QzG2q1

Is it grabbing some new junk? Is it eating something? I have no idea. Answers on a postcard, or a sealed down envelope.

I had no idea the canal even HAD shrimp in it! Well I'll be...

The F&C canal is incredibly clean just now. It's almost like they have a giant pond filter in it somewhere.

I want one!  Do you have a link to where you bought the endoscope?

This is the one I filmed 'the beast' with:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XK6THB4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But I've just bought this new wireless one (which I'll be testing out this weekend) which is longer:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078Z94492/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

To hell with boating. I'm now addicted to filming the canals bottom with my endoscope.

Oh matron!  :D

been considering one of these for quickly checking the prop rather than lifting the engine hatch, unscrewing the weed hatch and then laying down and blindly flailing about at arms length to check for rubbish (good lady wife can only just touch blades with fingertips). now you’ve convinced me it’s an excellent purchase!

The first link has a couple of different lengths to choose from and must be plugged into the phone/tablet.

The second link is about 17ft long, and can be plugged into the phone/tablet directly, but also comes with a little wifi box for wireless connection. Also comes in a nice little case.

If you like the new one, let me know if you want to sell the old one.

The one thing to be aware of with the wifi model is that you'll lose your internet while you're connected to the endoscope. Once the endoscope wifi is off your phone should automatically reconnect to your normal wifi again.
