Tixall Wide & Swing Bridge 108

Two questions as heading down the Trent & Mersey and considering a small detour for an overnight mooring,

- is the swing bridge between Tixall Wide and Great Hayward Junction normally left open or closed (sometimes farm ones are open)? Just wondering as crew will be cooking by then, and I need to prepare for an ear bashing!!

- is there usually plenty of room to moor along Tixall Wide? Wouldn't want to have to wind and tell the crew they have to do the bridge again, both ears bashed!

It’s not a swing bridge — it’s just a normal bridge that for some reason lost in the mists of time is called swing bridge.

 

As for moorings on the wide, sometimes there is loads of room, sometimes not.  It depends when you get there.

There's more than enough room to wind. I once looped the loop in Tixall Wide while towing a disabled boat!

Swivel bridge is just a stone bridge now, has been for years.

Enjoy, tixhall wide is my favourite place on the whole system.  You might even see kingfishers.

 

if the wide is full, you can usually moor beyond, in either direction, towards Great Haywood is best though, IMHO.

What are you doing employing such bolshie crew?

Remind them once what their duties are and then next time dump them on the towpath.
