There may be something in what you say; but I don't think you'd contest the fact that some of our members really are experts: we have professional boatbuilders, boat painters, engineers, and a few people whose knowledge of canal and boat history is obviously the fruit of many years' enthusiasm and study.

Of course, one has to work out who they are!

Do you not think the same applies to face Book, some of the experts on here are also on facebook. As for friends, I have only met half a dozen people on here face to face and probably wouldn't have spoken to them if I hadn't known them from here. Whats the difference.

Different kinds of social media have (broadly speaking) a different demographic. I'd say Facebook's is younger, thus one might infer that those on forums have more experience.

Quite true. My grandkids are on Farcebook I am not or ever will be and Mother at present isnt a member. I am though in touch with all of them in an instant on Alexander Graham Bells contraption thats been  around for a hell of a long time. Or pictures by the new fangled email, both work for me.

I resisted Faceache for years. Then I became the sad git that I am, I am now involved in a number of groups of ex-service sites these include ships on which I served, the branch of which I was a part etc. I have met up with numerous past colleagues and I am attending my first reunion in September. Like I have from Canalworld, I have gained knowledge and information that for me has been beneficial, maybe not to others.

Theres a load of un-necessary gobble-de-gook, which I ignore.

So there!

Yes indeed, I am a member of various groups on Face Book (mainly blues, ska and reggae music fora) and the extent and depth of knowledge, and publication of archive material such as posters and newspaper articles, on them is both awe-inspiring and educational.

I do not think that I had suggested that I thought otherwise.

Feel like I should say something here to stick up for the 'new London boaters' group! In my opinion it is actually one of the better, more balanced and sensible boating facebook groups. Mostly for new boaters to ask questions in an attempt to learn about boating without the risk of a tirade of sarcasm and patronising comments that one can get in many of the other groups!

Not sure where the OP gets the idea no one in it is interested in history? Or why that would matter anyway?

Although i must say the statement about no CRT employees is odd as there are plenty of questions about CRT guidelines for cc'ing with mostly sensible answers from people who do know what they are talking about...

Ive used facebook since about 2006 or 7 i know most on my friends list personally but do not use their messenger service or app and lately just visit groups I am a member of or help admin on, one has 15000+ members and doesn't seem to have too many ejits posting rubbish they don't know about,  on the other hand I don't post personal stuff on my news feed, I am getting increasingly  more irate with what farcebooks algorithms decide to show me.

I have even gone back to a forum I set up in 2003 and was very busy till around 2010 when FB really took off, I must admit I prefer forums like this one.

However my 19yo daughter sees Facebook as a place for old fogeys who want to boast about the great life they want us to think they have and what they can afford (allegedly). I’m not sure I disagree with her.

I think this is true. But you have to bear in mind that Mr Smelly’s grand children are in their 40s.

You’ve made several statements there without any explanation or justification. Facebook doesn’t support voice calls which somehow allow multiple people to participate without being in the same place at the same time. So no benefit over a group phone call / Skype call.

Yes I can see it is like a family notice board but so is an email group.

in what way is FB messenger better than say an email group or a WhatsApp message?

In what way is an email group or WhatsApp group any better than FB messenger? I don't use or have a Facebook account and rarely use WhatsApp so have no skin in this game but it is quite possible that Facebook works well for those who use it.

In the border of my Farcebook I suddenly saw an advert for one of the "specialist groups"

It's called New London Boaters ,

Hello I thought I wonder what they're interested in …..

About this group
Description

This is a safe space for boaters to discuss things which they don't feel comfortable posting onto the more public Facebook groups. There is an emphasis on forming boatcamps with buddy boating and impromptu new boater gatherings as a way to give new boaters the confidence to venture further out. It's a closed group which means postings are private and only visible to other members. Useful, civilised debate is welcome. Constructive criticism is encouraged (especially with regard safety issues).

OK, I thought, they're attempting to face up to the realities of boat living in 2018 with all of its pros and cons, advising those who know nothing about boats, canals, the law etc?

Yeah right! They go on to say...……..

Tedious, scoldy, antagonistic and moany stuff may mysteriously disappear...(Mwa ha ha! 1f609.png;) ) For the sake of creating a safe environment and to respect privacy, employees and those strongly in support of CRT's tighter new enforcement policies are requested to abstain.

So that's really useful isn't it?

In other words ……..

We want people to join this group if they're interested in cheap housing, have no experience or genuine interest in our canals or history. The subject is a minefield and although almost anything that you'll hear from "Bloke" down the pub will be wrong or even illegal. Anybody who can throw light on this situation need not contribute otherwise we'll just stick our fingers in our ears and shout "LA LA LALA"

Our website is like a cult, we only talk about our version and ignore reality, because it doesn't suit us.

Really Useful Eh?

You know you don't have to join the group? Or look at it? Or have anything to do with it whatsoever?

Honestly, your post reeks of snobbery. You're reading into what purpose that group serves to suit your own agenda, whatever that might be. I'm struggling to see what you've gained from making this post other than to demonstrate some holier than thou attitude. Do you not have anything better to do with your time? ?

They are probably much of a muchness TBH.

But what Nick seemed to miss was that I actually was comparing Facebook Messenger with basic text messaging, over which it is far superior. Facebook messenger allows the sending of messages including pictures and to multiple recipients that doesn't cost anything other then your data allowance or even better nothing at all if you send over wi-fi. Sending picture messages even to a single recipient is rarely included in your monthly text allowance and is expensive for what it is.

If you send picture messages a lot (which we as a family do) the cost would soon mount up using texts.

They pretty much are. One messenger app will have features another doesn't and vice-versa. Whatever works best for you and your friends/family is what you use. I struggle to understand why people have such concerns about what other people buy/use/do/involve themselves with when it has no bearing whatsoever on their own life.

I'm a pretty keen photographer and photographers are prime examples of those who are far too interested and concerned with what brand someone else has on the front of their camera or what lens they're using or whatever else. Nothing to do with you mate!

I use an aging Lumix GF1....... Bought used on eBay for £135 so I cant afford to be a 'photo gear snob'. But you are correct it suits me I'm happy with it and as far as I can tell takes great pictures.

That's because some cameras and lenses are better than others for certain types of shooting.?
