What a depressing read!

I'm not sure how that line makes you believe we're not happy with the content. It is the way you read it, that is at fault. We simply put that other views would be nice to read and that some on here have very different views to ours about boats and boating, lets say. We're very pleased to have all views to read, that's why we'd like to look around.

Not being social media types we haven't really bothered to look, to be honest.

But we'll take your point and explain in more detail, if we see fit in future.

I read your original post, found it too ambiguous to get any clear meaning from. Surely this is your failure to communicate your meaning not a problem with my reading?

I'm not complaining, write as you wish, but I imagine that you did wish to say something that others could understand.

Sorry you didn't understand it. Seemed clear to us.

OK, my fault: I read it wrong - should have gone to Specsavers!  Can I just remind you that my post started with "Let me check I'm reading this right: "? :)

Yes, you checked, but did as many do, put your spin on a very clear post. :)

OK, it's gone to the judging panel. It's going to be close, Sea Dog having to go defensive in the face of a prolonged response from 70liveaboard. And the result is in  - the winner of the thread is.......

No-one. Can't win an unwinnable, unimportant topic like this.... ? How others write or perceive info..

We're the worst sometimes.. New to us this social media stuff, don't forget. :)

Defensive? Moi?  I merely rolled over!  I have to learn to read what folk mean to say despite their actual words and I now realise that checking with them avoid misinterpretation, far from being prudent, is to apply spin.

OP -  the link, if you please?  ;)

I'm sure it seemed clear to you - you knew what you intended to get across - but I promise you that it was far from clear to me.

OP, put a link in to this read..

We've not long found this site and some on here are not really like the canal-folk we know and have known, over the past 50yrs or so.

So it would be nice to see more opinions of the canal world. I'm not a social meda type. ;) Interesting getting others thoughts on something we love, so would be nice to read.

Thanks.

Just search for narrowboatworld

We did look, but the only thing that came up was this: http://narrowboatworld.com/

Nothing that looks like a forum or place for conversation ?

They did have a forum for a while, but it quickly got taken down when people started expressing views disagreeing with theirs.

I think this is where the problem lies.

You already know the views expressed on NBW are relentlessly negative, but you are saying they would be 'nice to read'. I promise you, they aren't!

One of the things that really stuck in my mind during a management course was :

"If the person you are talking to doesn't understand then it is your fault for not explaining it properly".

I may sometimes appear to be condescending and 'talking down' to folks but without knowing their skills / knowledge levels is it better to assume they know nothing, or to assume they do know it but just being dumb ?

For one, we're not talking face to face, but communicating via writing, therefore there is room for misunderstanding. Plus again if people read into a post something they find not to their taste, they will obviously read it that way.

However, that does not mean to say it was written that way, or with that intention. That is probably a problem with non face to face 'talk', you can't look at the face to know the meaning.

But its unimportant and those that read into it negativity, then they will do that. I can't help those that do.

We find all views and opinions about boats/boating nice to read, lets be clear.

If we agree or not is another matter.

It could be read multiple ways, and I also don't now think the meaning I initially read into it was actually what was the poster intended to mean.

So, yes, I agree with you!

Not really. Block 'The Floater', then anyone who 'shares' it.

Haven't seen anything from him for months

IMO what Underwood does on Facebook with trying to publicise that is worse than bloody regular spam email.

It's something the NBTA specialise at as well.  Promote your material by hitting every canal related Facebook group, and you might actually find someone prepared to read it.

It would be great not to have to block such spamming, wouldn't it?
